Not Hoffman at his best...
Little Big Man review

I normally love movies with Dustin Hoffman. He tends to pick great roles that highlight his acting talents. But Little Big Man is not one of his great roles in my opinion. Despite the movie's sensitive observation of the treatment of Native-Americans, the movie tends to stumble awkwardly between comedy and brutality, and I thought the Arthur Penn's focus on bloodletting was a little too much.
There are some great cameo turns here though, with Martin Balsam as an optimistic sideshow conman, Faye Dunaway as Hoffman's amorous saviour, and of course the wonderful Chief Dan George as Hoffman's world-weary, philosophical adopted grandfather.
A good story, but not as well-told as some other great westerns. Try The Outlaw Josey Wales before renting this one. It's funnier, and the action much, much better.
