Werner finds a soulmate
By Savage (632 reviews) from London, England , 23 Feb 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Towards the end of this outstanding documentary, Werner Herzog has the cheek to suggest that his subject, Dieter Dengler, who escaped the Viet-Cong in unimaginably horrendous circumstances, must be hiding something, because he seems so cheerful. As if Herzog himself hasn't subjected everyone around him to catastrophic hardships (people alledgedly died filming 'Fitzcarraldo'), without even having a war going on as an excuse. To be fair, Dengler's sang froid, as he recalls and describes his nightmare is something to behold, and Herzog clearly knows it's a great story, because he allows it to be told without artifice, and with the maximum of tension and, yes, gallantry. Dengler proves awesome company for 70 minutes, and the film is outstanding.
Plus, another Herzog doc, 'Wings of hope', is included as an extra, about a woman who walked out of the South American jungle following a plane crash. It's good, too.- Was this review helpful to you?

By ArthouseAlec (18 reviews) , 21 Apr 2012.this .film is about the raw will to survive, and not much about flying! Werner Herzog is a film maker steeped in the tradition of German high romanticism (there is even a clip of Wagner, alongside Siberian throat music and other curios in the soundtrack) but his themes of man in nature and the nature in man have been better dealt with elsewhere. This documentary has neither the lyrical beauty of , say, the White Diamond, or the raw power of Grizzly Man. The visuals don't add a lot to the hero's breathlessly compulsive narration and Herzog's usual asides are stretched a little this time. Indeed the whole thing might have been better presented as a book - the most memorable image, that of little Dieter looking out his window into the visor of a pilot on a low-level WW2 raid, is not represented visually at all. Finally, the film didnt need to be evenhanded about the Vietnam war and its mutual atrocities (though there is a concession to the other side in some bombing footage which looks like it has been borrowed from Coppola) but a lack of political context might bother some viewers.- Was this review helpful to you?

Wow!
By peebee0 (6 reviews) from London , 11 Nov 2009As a cynical 40-something it's rare these days that a film - and especailly a documentary - reaffirms my belief in human nature and leaves me open-mouthed at the ability of human beings to overcome circumstances!
Thank you Werner!- Was this review helpful to you?
