Sleepers were spies planted in key locations with orders to live unremarkable lives so that, when activated, their operations would not arouse suspicion. The sleepers in this case are the parents of teenager River Phoenix, whose application to join the US Air Force arouses the suspicions of FBI agent Sidney Poitier. The intriguing premise behind this picture — also known as Little Nikita — is wasted by director Richard Benjamin, who settles for a mildly diverting game of cat and mouse as Poitier and Phoenix join forces to catch the real Soviet snakes.

  • A refreshingly original thriller that is also a wrenchingly poignant family drama... How good it is to have Poitier back in front of the camera...

    • Los Angeles Times
  • Ineptly plotted thriller that piles on complexity at the cost of credibility; the acting is better than the script or direction deserve.
