This comedy drama firmly established Bill Forsyth as a major British film-maker. It's a lyrical, almost mystical, tale that follows the attempts of Texas oilman Burt Lancaster and his minion Peter Riegert to buy up an isolated Scottish village in order to build an oil refinery, without bargaining on the village's integral strength of community. Local Hero manages to avoid the relentless whimsy that over-egged Forsyth's previous outing, Gregory's Girl: the scenery is gorgeous, the performances funny, ironic and moving (Lancaster, in particular, is superb), and Forsyth brings a sure directorial touch.
Reminiscent of various Ealing comedies, especially Whisky Galore and The Maggie, this ambitious comedy is really not funny enough for its great length.
A fantastic feel good film that is as comforting as it is funny. The typical "outraged natives" plot which usually transpires when an "evil" oil firm attempts to ruin the countryside is given an amusing twist.
Tragically underrated, this film is an absolute gem. The scenery is fantastic, and you really feel for the American guy who finds that he's sent to condemn his new-found paradise to be destroyed - and no one seems to mind but him.
The locals are funny, the timing is superb, and the offbeat surreal jokes are great. I recommend that everybody watch this film when they are feeling in a bad mood, it will immediately cheer you up!

Local Hero, made in 1983, was a Bafta-winning comedy directed by Bill Forsyth that starred Burt Lancaster, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Jenny Seagrove. The poll of 2,000 film critics and journalists was carried out for the Film Distributors' Association. Lord Puttnam, who produced Local Hero, said: "I am delighted but not all that surprised that Local Hero has proved... Read more
