Anouk Aimée (A Man and a Woman) delivers a groundbreaking performance in the title role of Lola, a sultry nightclub entertainer. Left by her sailor lover Michael (Jacques Harden) on the eve of her pregnancy seven years ago, Lola brings up their son while working as a dancer. She anxiously awaits the return of Michael, who has gone to America to seek his fortune. In his absence, Lola spends time in the company of her childhood friend Roland (Marc Michael) and an American Sailor Frankie (Alan Scott). She is a woman searching for love and would settle down with one of them if her heart did not belong to Michael. Jacques Demy s gorgeously shot B? debut film is a loving tribute to Max Ophuls that has now been restored to radiant form under the supervision of his widow, award winning film-maker Agnes Varda.

Worth seeing, if only for the delightful singing & dancing of the enchanting Anouk Aimée. Jacques Demi's bittersweet fairy story of lost & found (& lost again) love is set in his beloved home town of Nantes; & one of its iconic buildings - the Passage Pommeraye - figures in several scenes. (But I must agree - the dubbing of the American sailors is awful!)

Am I missing something?

I rented 'Lola' because I love 'Les Parapluies de Cherbourg' but I'm afraid 'Lola' is a disappointment. I'm struggling, somewhat, to find enough interest to see it through to the end. I suppose it's a detail but the dubbing of the American voices is simply dreadful!

A pity, but if you are tempted, as I was, by the brilliance of 'Parapluies', beware!
