    Brilliant piece of history

Michael Gambon is marvellous as John Harrison and to see his frustration as he tries to prove that his invention is just what is needed is amazing.

At one stage I wanted to wring Brian Cox's neck for being so stupid and narrow minded in turning down yet another application by Gambon.

I know Gambon got a knighthood and if it wasn't for this performance it should have been. Really excellent.

    Unlikely subject

The manufacture and perfection of a sea-going clock in the 18th century would seem to be an unlikely subject for a dramatic and entertaining film but Longitude is just that. Cleverly parallel stories of the obsession of one man over the building of his clocks and another's, two centuries later, with the restoration of the timepieces works perfectly after a slight initial confusion. An all-star British cast scarcely puts a foot wrong. A must for those with an interest in the navy and navigation.
