Classic theatre
By Leon Collins from London , 11 Jan 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
A solid theatrical production of John Osborne's ground-breaking play directed by Judi Dench. Branagh is superb as the manic, ranting Jimmy Porter who vents his frustration with society on his wife (Emma Thompson) and mistress (Siobhan Redmond). The original play changed the face of English theatre forever and kick-started the British New Wave cinema although modern audiences will probably find Jimmy an insufferable bore who should be sectioned.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Disappointing
By a customer from London , 07 Oct 2007A great cast but I felt as if I was watching a play that had been filmed rather than a film. It would have been great to see 'live' but just didn't translate to the screen A shame.- Was this review helpful to you?

A+ for effort...
By Mike from Leamington Spa , 21 Feb 2006Powerfully written but now, very dated outburst from an angry young playwright, 50 years ago. Too faithful to a stage production to be really effective on the screen. Peformances worthy rather than impressive.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent play, could be done more justice
By a customer from Edinburgh , 30 Oct 2005The quality of the writing shines through. This is a play which must be seen.
Unfortunately, the quality of the sound recording is really quite bad at times. The cast is no doubt very talented, but I am not sure whether really they are suited to the roles. I have seen a much better performance of this play recently which marred my enjoyment of this dvd somewhat.- Was this review helpful to you?

Brilliant
By a customer from UK , 19 Jul 2005Despite the low budget production (and foggy TV drama visual quality), this is an electrifying production. Comparisons with Burton and Taylor's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' are inevitable. Both are a must see for lovers of stage adaptations.- Was this review helpful to you?
