It's 3 hours long but never drags. It's about hobbits, elves, dwarves and wizards but feels like an epic drama. It's the first part of a trilogy but works perfectly as a complete film. It's TOO GOOD!
I've only met one person who didn't like this film, and they were weird. On whatever level you choose to examine it, it can't really be faulted; Acting, Screenplay, Direction, Effects, big budget blockbuster or intelligent literary adaptation, there's nothing wrong with it. You've probably already seen it, so I don't really know why i'm adding a review, and i'm not saying anything original... but if, by some freak chance, you've NOT watched this yet, get it now!
The DVD is great, too, as they've chucked about a million extras at it, most of which involves all of the main people from the film (Jackson, McKellan, Wood etc).
Don't believe the hype. Its bladder bustingly long, its tedious and you won't care.
Peter Jackson made Bad Taste, Braindead and The Frightners. All top notch films. Why did he make this never ending trilogy only to be followed up by King Kong. Another yawn fest.
Unless you suffer from narcolepsy, don't bother with any of this tosh.
If you haven't seen this movie after no doubtedly hearing all the hype, then you owe it to yourself (and to Peter Jackson!) to watch it. I'd never seen anything like it before. I didn't watch it at the cinema and never knew what it was about. I watched it after hearing my Uncle giving it so much praise that I had to see it. I was overwhelmed by the entire movie, it's enchanting characters and the wonderful story set in 'Middle Earth.'............. Frodo, a hobbit of the Shire must carry the great burden of the 'one ring' and see that it is destroyed in order to save all of Middle Earth from the evil dark Lord Sauron. Amongst the Fellowship who help him along the way are: Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen,) Legolas the Elf Prince(played by Orlando Bloom,) and Gandalf the wizard, (played by Ian McKellen) The entire cast are astounding. I get so frustrated when I hear or see the pathetic attempts to criticise the LOTR movies as none are even worthy of listening to. Watching this movie gives you some idea of the incredible amount of time, effort, hard work and love that has gone into this brilliant adaptation of years of Tolkien's brilliant work........... Some one told me that they didn't want to see this movie as they had no interest in it. I told her to keep taking the tablets and let me know if they ever find a procedure to reverse her obvious labotamy!
PLEASE SEE THIS MOVIE.
the greatest film of our time!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
A triumph. Taking tolkiens book and delivering us with this. Superb.
Jackson lays the foundation of the book so well. Powerfully acted and delivered. Where was Sir Mckellen oscar?!! Possibly one of the finest films ever made.
Though the theatrical release DVD is good, better to invest in the extended version.

testing LOTR to write review
When it was released I wasn't exceptionally desperate to see it, but as soon as I switched it on I was blown away. Even though it is long compared to the average film of today, I was engrossed from start to finish. The special effects are amazing, the storyline builds up to some excellent closing scenes and it simply leaves you gagging for more of the same. The acting is totally spot-on and the soundtrack is one of the best film soundtracks I've heard for years! A definite must-see movie for everyone.
I thought I was getting the film with the bonus disc. What I got was just the extras explaining the clever way that the film was made and the actors describing the clever characterisation.
Strictly for film geeks and luvvies as far as I am concerned.
the greatest film of our time!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Fans of Tolkien will be more than pleased with this richly detailed and imagined screen adaptation. Those unaware of the novels will find a peculiar absence of rhythm to this engagement, while fans will make this movie their sacred treasure. Nevertheless, beware of the action sensation overload, behold of its wearisome effects. Rings will obliterate your senses, whether you find that a good thing or not.
Although verging on the geeky and anorakish, I don't have much quarrel with the book series on which this film is based as they captured my imagination as a kid. But that's the difference - like Harry Potter this story is best left to the kids. I found this film pedantic in detail, mawkish, sentimental, simplistic, and overly long so much so that I fast forwarded through several scenes without losing anything. All of these things but the length panders to American mindsets/Homer Simpson IQs. There was an animated film of LOR that I saw in my teens which totally outdoes this if were talking about special effects and character studies and come on, these days its so easy with that CGI stuff. Whats harder to do is for actors to act McKellan and Lee being old hands cruise through without breaking a sweat, while many of the others play with bland middle-of-the-road characterization (Blanchett, Tyler, Bean, Holm) wet and limp like soggy old veg. Boring, unremarkable, overly-long and over-blown.
