Lost Command

This action-packed war film follows the adventures of a group of paratroopers in the French army. Leading the soldiers is Pierre Raspeguy (Anthony Quinn), a tough peasant who has risen through the ranks to become a lieutenant colonel. The troop first heads off to Indochina, where French forces suffer a big defeat at Dien Bien Phu. Soon, the men are sent off to Algeria, whose citizens are waging a fierce guerrilla war against French rule. Not all of the servicemen, however, support their country's decisions -- including Algerian-born Mahidi (George Segal), who deserts his comrades after his parents are murdered during the fighting.

French soldier Anthony Quinn gathers his old unit from the Indo-China war and heads for Algeria, ready to crush the independence movement. But his hopes to recruit another old buddy, George Segal, are dashed when he discovers that Segal heads up the rebel army. In between all this is Claudia Cardinale, looking gorgeous and changing sides according to which man she shares a scene with. Alain Delon and Maurice Ronet (both of whom were up for the Omar Sharif role in Lawrence of Arabia) guaranteed the movie a huge audience in France, though it's unlikely that American audiences would even know where Algeria was or why Anthony Quinn and George Segal thought it worth the bother of their dodgy French accents.

  • Anti-war war adventure; noisy but scarcely inspired.

    Brutal

A very unglamorous and realistic portrail of war. Great acting and a good storyline combined. Would highly recommend it.

    Customer Review

From French Vietnam to pre revolutionary Algeria a realistic war scenario. The French Para's with The Mighty Quinn as their Colonel backed by Alain Delon and George Segal . No Anthony Quinn fan could ask for anything more.
