Kenneth Branagh's musical adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy sets the action in the last few days before the start of World War II. In the fictional kingdom of Navarre, King Ferdinand (Alessandro Nivola) and three chums take vow to study rigorously and avoid women for three years. Their vow is immediately tested with the surprise visit of the Princess of France (Alicia Silverstone) with three ladies-in-waiting. Romantic merriment ensues as each of the men fall in love and attempt to woo the ladies without being caught. Branagh's film features musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and others performed in the classic style of 1930s MGM musicals.

Kenneth Branagh gives this adaptation of Shakespeare's play a lift by combining the story of four sets of lovers with a host of 1930s and 40s song-and-dance numbers. Adrian Lester shines in a sublime musical set piece, and Natascha McElhone again demonstrates the depth and beauty that will make her a major star. The film is flawed, though. The environment never transcends the feel of a studio, American stars Alicia Silverstone and Matthew Lillard are clumsy and miscast, and Branagh has lost some of the play's complexity by oversimplifying the text. Though very enjoyable in places, this has the feel of a West End show and displays little of Branagh's immense talent and imagination as a film-maker.
"...The film ends with a long, sweetly melancholic sequence....You leave the theater tipsy on Shakespeare's raillery and Ira Gershwin's wit, as though you'd had a glass or two of cheap champagne..."
To be honest, I thought I'd give this a miss when it came out in the cinema. Not a great fan of Cole Porter and so on, though Branagh has clearly done some excellent Shakespeare for the big screen (Henry V, Hamlet, Much Ado...), and some less good (Othello)...
... but I thought I'd give it a go on DVD and wasn't disappointed at all.
True, the Shakespeare is cut to the bare bones but the production, the style, the enthusiasm, the singing and dancing... what a joy!
Essentially set in Navarre in pre-WWII era the King and his friends vow to a 3 years course of improvement (study, philosophy and definitely no women)so unfortunate that the French Princess is on her way with her maids !
Sit back and enjoy !
