A barrage of ripe old Hollywood clichés spiced with new-fangled bad language. In the circumstances, well enough made, and certainly astonishingly popular.

    Funny and touching

I rented this after I read the reviews because it sounded unintentionally funny. It was.

I loved the wooden acting and the cheesy cliched roles. I loved the fact that the male lead called his Dad sir. I loved the fact that the poor heroine at first didn't like the rich arrogant jock then agrees to go for coffee with him anyway.

I love how the music is repeated all the way through the film.

This is one of the most charming films I have ever seen.

Even though I got it to laugh at, the ending was really touching.

Best of all, the film only lasted 1hr30mins.

    Perfect.

    worth watching

I watched this when I was feeling sad anyway - probably not the wisest choice.I mainly wanted to know what the story behind that cheesy theme music was. It's good, although the quick initial pace makes it seem a bit rushed and garbled - when did they get a chance to fall in love? The end is all very quick as well, which is a shame,as it seems perhaps to be the whole point of the novie. It did make me cry though

Still good after all these years!

The definitive love story, slightly dated but still eminently watchable. Even 35 years on, people will be reaching for the hankies, treat yourselves girls (and fellas).

    A+

I think this is one of the movies that you can watch few times and it will always touch you. I think it's brilliant.

    the best in its genre

Im not much for romantic/sentimental type films, however, i have to say this is truely a film that makes u feel sorry for the situation that the 2 main characters are in. Especially when you consider how much Ryan O'Neils character gives up to marry the one he loves.

    < < What a love story! ! ! > >

Even though its an old film, The story line was very heartwarming. Two people make extreme decisions in order to support and make their loved ones happy. Very enjoyable romance film.

    Worth Watching

If you haven't seen it in 30 years (like me) then it's worth a look. It's a bit dated and doesn't bring a tear to the eye but Ryan Oneil is nice to look at. Sadly, the 'interesting' female character that stirred us all 30 years ago is mediocre by today's standard of woman. Then, Ali McGraw seemed ready to take on the world, her own woman, strong. All women are like her today and her character wouldn't be seen as extraordinary. Still worth watching just to note these cultural changes. And why is Ryan O'Neil so upset with his father anyway?

    Some one pass the bucket

A cult movie in it's time, but age has not been good to this film. It is the foundation of love story movies, but it should be buried with the rest of the foundations. **
