Unlike a number of old TV programmes that I've been rediscovering, this one really stands the test of time.
Lovejoy may ultimately have gone on a series or two too many, but back in those early years it was fresh, and that freshness is still very apparent. The individual story lines are fine, but we're really interested in the characters as they are slowly revealed over the episodes. This was obviously the intention & the producers don?t let us down. Neither does the first rate cast.
The first disc of Series One carried the first part of a very recent interview with Ian McShane. It's a worthwhile addition; it sheds interesting background on the initial decision to film the books, it also allows him the opportunity to speak well of the production and his fellow actors. That last is welcome after some of the hints to the contrary that were around when Deadwood was being publicised
This was a series of its own. It was based on a a book which, I have found, usually means a good product when filmed.Easy-going and easy to watch. Well made.
