Can you resist?
By Dave Jordan from Lee, london , 02 Nov 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Spellbinding!
It's 1943, Lyon, France and we follow the exploits of a small cell of the Resistance as they fight back against the Nazi Occupation.
However, someone tips off the local police and arrests are made which set off a train of events that is to turn Lucie into a scheming heroine as she sets out to free her husband.
This French film is remarkable for its cinematography: the director, Claude Berri has a way of drawing in the audience by positioning the viewer almost as a participant, a passerby. He uses long sweeping shots that track the characters from one position to another, bypassing the camera midway and putting us into the action.
This is a great film, a must see; and the subtitles are not intrusive.- Was this review helpful to you?

Should be compulsory watching in all schools
By a customer from South East England , 23 Aug 2010This film demonstrates, in quite terrifying terms, what the price of Freedom is. It has the feeling of reality about it from first to last, not only in its depiction of life in France under Nazi occupation, but in its portrayal of a loving marriage. It has moments of sheer terror - as in the first moments of capture and interrogation and is far from comfortable viewing. I was repeatedly reminded of the stories of my own family members of what it was like to live under Nazi tyranny in Europe in WW2 and in this 'Lucie Aubrac' was totally unlike the ghastly 'Zwartboek' (called 'Blackbook' in English) movie of more recent years. Above all this film confronts the viewer with the uncomfortable questions 'What would you have done? Would you have stood aside and kept your head down? And how far would you go to save a loved one?' I'd like to see this film shown in every secondary school in Britain as a reminder of the value of the freedom we take so lightly and of the price that must be paid to preserve it when it comes under threat.- Was this review helpful to you?

good film
By a customer from OXON , 03 Aug 2009Good acting and well shot, this is, overall, a good film. It was well paced and the plot kept me interested. It was lacking in the 'wow' factor a little otherwise it'd be a 4 star review.- Was this review helpful to you?

Resistance heroes
By a customer from Attleborough , 17 Jun 2009This film reminded me of standing on Lyon railway station and my father ,who was in SOE and worked with the Resistance, pointing out the Gestapo headquarters which were close to the station. Claus Barbie who appears briefly in the film was the infamous leader of the Lyon branch. What a brave woman Lucie was to go to any lengths to save her husband! She is part of that band of fearless women, Odette, Violette and many others! A marvellous film which captures the spirit and atmosphere of the time.- Was this review helpful to you?
