not the best but worth it for ciofi's dramatic portrayal

The french version of this work does differ from the more popular italian version. Ciofi performs the mad scene without the two unwritten high e flats or it may be f's i'm not sure which key it is performed in, also the famous duet with the flute in the mad scene is missing. In my opinion though Ciofi gives one of the most dramatic performances i've seen. (her wierd facial contortions aside.)

My main gripe about this production is the men. Alagna tends to shout his way through the role of edgar. A much better performance from him was his recent faust. The other men were adequate, no more.

    Not Recommended

This is a dark, bleak & tortured version of an old favorite. A large part of it bears little resemblance to Donizetti's original opera.

A major problem is far too often the singer or singers appear as small persons on a dark empty stage, the alternative being a screenful of the tortured features of a hard working singer, not very nice at all.

The sound recording quality of the singers is very poor but the orchestra sound is ok.

What a great pity a performer of Alagna's standard should appear in such rubbish.
