Remember Swingers? 'You're money, baby!' Well Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) is so not money, he's flat broke. And that may as well stand for Lucky You, too. Curtis Hanson's film has been sitting on the shelf for some time now, and was finally released in the US the same week as Spider-man 3 (not even the incredible hulk would relish that fight). Not surprisingly it bombed. Although he's a chronic gambler and a card sharp, Huck only cares about money in so much as it buys him a seat at the table.... Read more
New reports state that Edward Norton, star of recent magical drama The Illusionist, is set to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in an upcoming Incredible Hulk film. Norton, who made a name for himself in Hollywood in films such as American History X and Fight Club, alongside Brad Pitt, will take up the Hulk mantle from Eric Bana. Bana, who starred as the Hulk in Ang Lee's version of the Marvel comic adaptation, has since starred in a string of movies including Troy, Munich and the soon to be... Read more
Bob Dylan casts an elusive shadow. This year we've seen Hayden Christensen playing Not Bob (at the insistence of Mr Dylan's lawyers) in Factory Girl. Now we get no less than six Bobs (though none goes by that name) in Todd Haynes' bio-mash-up, I'm Not There. The title comes from one of the more obscure Basement Tapes recordings, and you can see why it... Read more
For a game that's been kicking around for nearly two hundred years, it's amazing how poker has boomed over the last decade. In 2002, there were 631 players in the World Series of Poker. Last year, there were more than 8000. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The profusion of online gaming sites and the introduction of the hole card camera (allowing home viewers to see what the best players in the world keep up their sleeves) have transformed an after-hours past time into big business and... In the age of celebrity, there are few stories as irresistible as the self-destruction of a creative artist. Whether it's Britney taking clippers to her hair, Whitney turning her multi-million dollar home into a crack den, or the bad joke that was Anna Nicole Smith's short life, the headlines are as lurid as the lawyers will allow, and we all feel that combination of pity and awe that is said to be the essence of tragedy. Hollywood wisdom has it that audiences won't sit for unhappy endings,... Read more
