    [Highly rated reviewer]

The Royals version of La bayadere may not have all the spectacle of the KIrov and Bolshoi versions (missed the Elephant and processional women with parrots on their arms) but with Irek and its Kirov prima guesting in makarova's restaging the choreography is classically pure and very well danced. The Kindom of shades only has 24 corps and not the required 36 though!!!!!!

This was just fantastic. Forget Swan Lake or the Nutracker, this original masterpiece will keep you tied to your seat. It is both contemporary and classical. Wonderful costume and set designs, with Indian influences, an excellent musical score and a very easy to follow ballet with each scene beautifully set out. Excellent choereography, from gods in gold to solo acts and pas de deux. Really this is a must see. I saw it at the Royal Opera House and wanted to see it again on DVD and it was just as magical the second time round. I would just love to wear those tutus!

You can't fault the Russian principals, and the soloists and corps are fine - but the production is just too cramped. The Royal Ballet really do need a purpose-built stage in order to reach the standard that the international players have achieved in 2009. Here's hoping...!

ALTHOUGH THIS IS A MORE COMPLETE VERSION IT DOES NOT COMPARE WITH NURYEVS VERSION, THE RUSSIAN DANCERS ARE SUPERB AND THE BRITISH DANCERS ONLY ADEQUATE. A PITY THE RUSSIANS ARE ALWAYS SUPERIOR. KIROV AND BOLSHOI ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD
