Superb Glyndebourne account of Bergs masterpiece
By milnerv from Dorset , 31 Dec 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
The moment we see the stage set we just know this is something special, there is a large circular brick wall three stories high, built around three concentric revolving stages with a black hole in the middle used as a staircase for characters to descent. Let into the wall in a spiral are white stone steps that are pushed out when needed, and retracted when not. Add a few chairs and this set sharply focuses attention on the operatic masterpiece that is Lulu.
The singing and acting is something really special, the highlight being Christine Schafer as Lulu, young, attractive and able to sing the demanding vocal part with ease and acting superbly. Also Schafer range can encompass Lulus transitions from sex kitten, to dominatrix to whore.
All the other singers act and sing wonderfully bringing the whole complex score to life, backed up by superb playing and conducting from the London Philharmonic and Andrew Davis.
One can imagine alternative productions but one cannot imagine a better one. If you love opera but are slightly hesitant about Berg and twentieth century music rent this immediately and it will change your mind.- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)Excellent All-round Production
By Seedyvee (183 reviews) from Grantham , 02 Jan 2012I can hardly say it is one one of my favourite operas but for three hours I marvelled at the quality of and expertise that went into this production. The singing was consistently powerful from all players over an orchestra that is often thick in texture and discordant, yet there was no straining despite the extreme demands required for this genre. The casting was excellent and the one-piece set was ideal for all acts. My only criticism is that the modern costumes were occasionally at odds with the content of the dialogue and did not evoke the dark years of inter-war Europe that I was expecting. Watch this if you enjoyed 'Wozzeck': the music is no less lyrical and is very approachable.- Was this review helpful to you?

A difficult opera
By gf (181 reviews) from Cullompton , 08 Aug 2006I find it difficult to rate this opera. I found both the story and the music difficult to get my head around and yet somewhere underneath it all I felt sure there was something very moving which I just had occasional glimpses of. I need quite a bit of help or persistence to appreciate Berg as I suspect he deserves. I can fully understand those who'd give this 5 stars. I certainly appreciated the quality of the production and maybe when I haven't got so many other opera DVDs I want to see I will give it another go.- Was this review helpful to you?

Modern Opera
By a customer from Yorkshire , 03 Sep 2005Wasn't sure what to make of this modern opera when it started, but found myself putting the papaer down to follow the twists and turns through the life of a lady with, what can only be politely called, loose morals!
Will look out for it to be on at the theatre to see again.- Was this review helpful to you?
