Ambiguous
By a customer from Hull , 04 Apr 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
Like most of Paul Auster's work this film is open to interpretation, and is likely to split critics. It's a well acted thought provoking drama, well worth checking out if you don't mind slower paced films, it should keep you watching because you are never sure where it's going to go- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Truly Auster
By mab (10 reviews) from London , 12 Jan 2010This one is for Paul Auster fans.
Set in a timeless backdrop the plott unfolds in a typically Austerian manner and takes you from one unexpected event to the next, telling a story on the verge of surrealism with the viewers (readers) agreement to accept that this is not fiction. The manner in which the dialogue is played out appears to be straight out of an Auster book.
If you like Auster you should watch it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very disappointing
By Susan from Manchester, England , 03 Oct 2007After the fantastic 'Blue in the Face' and 'Smoke', I expected great things from this Paul Auster screenplay. The dialogue was dreadful and the plot erring on the ridiculous. 1 star for the Lou Reed cameo 'Not Lou Reed'!- Was this review helpful to you?

interrupted
By a customer from Reading, England , 23 Apr 2007Hard to know what to make of this. It's intriguing as far as it goes, but it stops suddenly with a rushed, fatuous twisted ending.
Might have been great if it had developed further for another hour, but maybe Auster had just run out of ideas, which is surprising.- Was this review helpful to you?

A losing chance
By chauncey (25 reviews) from devon , 08 Oct 2006Auster's real directorial debut is a feast of awkwardness. Whilst his novels explore and navigate great themes, this movie lies dead on the screen and features a seemingly uncomfortable Keitel as our unconvincing protagonist. Shame.- Was this review helpful to you?
