I must admit that I did not think much of Ang Lee's other films (eg. Crouching Tiger, Sense and Sensibility), but this defied my expectations. Very layered characters, making you identify with all of them, very nuanced performances and great acting and pace! Though longer than usual at 2.5hrs, you wouldn't feel bored!
Highly recommended!- Was this review helpful to you?

(218)Good but difficult sub titles
By Bobsview (549 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 04 Apr 2013Chinese film. Unusual theme of Chinese resistance against the Japanese in WWII. A young girl from the resistance forms a very dangerous relationship with a senior Chinese collaborator with the aim of arranging his execution. The heroin inevitably forms an emotional attachment to her intended victim. Very explicit sex. Chinese speech throughout with English sub titles which at times are too quick to read. Over 2 and a half hours long. I quite liked it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Strange film
By a customer , 20 Jan 2013Couldn't get into this or understand it right from the start. The sub-titles were too fast. Couldn't stand more than 20 minutes...so perhaps didn't really give it a chance!- Was this review helpful to you?

Gripping drama of idealism vs fear-driven cynicism
By a customer , 15 Jan 2013This was a gripping portrayal of the drama of the Japanese occupation of China during WWII, through the eyes of the most powerful women (introduced playing mahjong), one man, and a group of idealistic students trying to fight the occupying force. Superbly acted right to the end and bearing all the hallmark quality of Ang Lee's directorship, I loved it - apart from the gruelling sex scenes which are verging on pornographic.- Was this review helpful to you?

Beautiful but Puzzling
By a customer , 30 Nov 2012This film is beautifully shot and quite compelling. Historically it is also fascinating. However by the end I found myself completely puzzled by the main character and found it difficult to believe she made the decisions she did.- Was this review helpful to you?

Best film yet
By PeterBurton (3 reviews) from West Moors, Dorset , 07 Jul 2012This is the best film we have rented and we had seen it twice in arts cinemas. It is so different from everything else that it should be seen by every film lover. Tang Wei is a fine actress, shifting from poor drab girl to femme fatale and back with ease. The story, set in Japanese occupied China, is gripping yet taken at a leisurely pace. The sex is very hot without ever being gratuitous and the ending is entirely believable. It makes mainstream Hollywood films look juvenile by comparison.- Was this review helpful to you?
