Superb new police drama
By Fudgefase (6 reviews) from Edinburgh , 05 Jun 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
Luther is one of the best police dramas I've seen for a long time. Idris Elba, fresh from the grittiness of 'The Wire', brings a consummate professionalism to the meaty role of John Luther, a top detective who is constantly at war with the darkness within himself. Superb acting by Elba, his 'natural' English accent without a trace of his time spent in the US, and a very strong supporting cast including Stephen Macintosh, lifts this drama way beyond the usual fare for TV. Luther is riveting television, a brilliant new character and a must-see event. Murder, kidnapping, psychopathic stalkers and a propensity for violence all raise the bar for police dramas to a new level when dealt with by John Luther. I sincerely hope series 1 won't be the last we see of him.- Was this review helpful to you?

Please sir, can I have some more?
By a customer , 18 Nov 2012Finally, something that can we can call our own and that can stand up against the US giants like Law & Order, Homicide and even Hill St. Blues. It is all ours, the cast, the locations, the language and the script. I'm glad the right man for the job got the lead cast, perfect pitching. We need more real 'what and who we are' dramas and less of Morse, Miss Marple really has had her day and I've given up on the most trusted white woman in the world 'Jessica Fletcher'....I would never let her use my phone if she broke down on the motorway! (haha).- Was this review helpful to you?

The script is ludicrous
By Aubrey8 (15 reviews) , 12 Oct 2012Totally ridiculous and irritating script and unrealistic characters. Stopped watching after second episode when that oh-so-very-clever girl popped up in Luther's wifes house.- Was this review helpful to you?

Absolutely Spellbinding
By Siskel (44 reviews) from Shrewsbury , 26 Jul 2012Being ex-police, I tend to have an interest in police series. Usually, I lose interest with them very quickly; THIS is something else. Absolutely magnificent, and the best police series to date so far (including The Wire which I thought was the brillian). Never 5 starts for any programme as there will always be one that pips another series.
You can see why Idris Elba won an award for this programme- Was this review helpful to you?
