A compliation of live tracks from the champions of southern american rock, recorded during their open air concerts in the UK and US. Amazing musicianship and showmanship from one of my favourite bands. Tracks are interlinked with interviews taken at the time and in the 90's, and home movie footage of the band on tour. The tragic deaths in a plane crash of several band members is handled sympathetically without being slushy. Well worth reliving all that 'head banging', which happened before the name was invented. Tribute tour is a bit of a let down after the original.
Consists of two parts before and after the tragic event of Oct 77. The first part primarily consists of footage from the 1976 Knebworth performance - with the omission of Freebird (personally my favourite performance of the song) - it being replaced by the 4 Jul 77 rendition at Oakland. Nevertheless very good watching. The second part comprises the reunion tour - not the same without Ronnie van Zant. Would happily purchase this DVD for future watching.
This definately for the Skynyrd fan and I am a big fan. It was wonderful it brought back memories and tears, the only negative comment is it's a shame they never included the full version of Freebird from Knebworth as the BBC know how film bands. The version they did include is utter rubbish with nearly all the solo's featuring footage of the crowd not the musicians, especially the guitar work.
pretty good dvd before and after the incident...nice insight for fans

free bird the movie is a totally moving tribute to lynyrd skynyrd. There are two parts in this dvd, the first is live footage of concerts with the original line up of lynyrd skynyrd including knebworth england 1977.In oct of that year ronnie vanzant, steve gaines and sister cassie were all killed in the plane crash that ended the short career of this awesome band. The second half of the dvd is the lynyrd skynyrd tribute band who reformed in 1987 with ronnie vanzants younger brother johnny on lead vocals along with original members gary rossington, artimus pyle, leon wilkson and billy powell. If your a skynyrd fan get this one its a must.
What any band documentary should be - a satisfying mix of interviews with the surviving members and family, concert footage, and testimonials from admirers. A compelling portrait of a landmark band who mixed southern boogie, rock, and blues and raised the bar considerably for generations to come. I still hope someone will make the definitive Skynyrd film - bringing together material from all of the sources which have surfaced over the years. Until then, this will do just fine.
Just the ticket if ya want to see a great band at their peak. Pictures a bit grainy but hey it was 1976. Great songs though and not to much documentary footage as to spoil the music.
Disk 2 the tribute well it's not Skynyrd but there are some insights into the history of the band and so on....
Disk one like Spinal Tap's amplifier 11 out of 10
Disk 2 Well 4 out of 10

Excellent live footage of band that played stadiums after such a short time. Johnny Van Zant steps into his brother shoes in the tribute band and does the songs great justice!
Must see movie. We enjoyed it soo much. Watched it twice and now we're going to buy it.
