Scary - and not always in a nice way.

Beware of the subtitles, sometimes they're a bit obscure. But for those with a grasp of the original German there's no distraction from the unusual visual style - 'expressionist' - which is this film's primary claim to a place on a modern TV screen, coupled with Peter Lorre at his finest - before he went to Hollywood and had to settle for caricature parts (even if they were in 'The Maltese Falcon' and similar). It might be interesting for non German speakers to watch this film with the sound turned down and with a CD of Carmina Burana playing in the the same room to emphasise the sense of impending doom. Those of a nervous disposition should not try this experiment.
