This is very wacky stuff indeed.... Im not going to give anything away about this DVD but I'm going to be watching the rest of this series... theres a bunch of really macarbre (sp.) images in this DVD that really stick in the memory..Takashi Miike (or Miike Takashi) is a Director I have been checking out recently and apart from one film that featured domestic abuse, incest and ugly lactating housewives I have enjoyed everything he's done... The Radio Times review for this film seems to be for a completely different film, I dont know what the heck thats all about.

I like surreal cinema. I travelled to Prague to see Jan Svankmajer's studio. I watch strange things on Channel four. I like melted perspectives on reality and things that you watch, and then have to watch again to understand. I like David Kronemburg, David Lynch and all those lovely folks who make Mulholland Drive look linear. I liked Tetsuo for the love of the saviour.

This was just a waste of two hours of my time. I like Takahashi Miike's other stuff a lot, and there were some moments that made me believe that this was just about to get good. It wasn't. This is just bad.

Do not rent this. Get something better. Clean your house. Do ANYTHING else with two hours of your life other than watch this god awful disgrace.

Yousuke Kobayashi, a homicide detective, sees his wife killed by a serial killer, Shinji Nishizono. From the shock of her death, he suffers MPD(Multiple Personality Disorder) and becomes Kazuhiko Amamiya. Eventually he manages to hunt down and kill the murderer of his wife. Now though, a new series of murders have occurred, and the suspects claim to be Shinji Nishizono himself! MPD Psycho is Takashi Miike’s attempt at a TV mini-series. If you have seen any of Takashi Miike’s films, then you will know what to expect from anything he has written or directed. While not as strange as The Happiness of the Katakuris, as violent and bloody as Ichi The Killer, as slow to build to a climax as Audition, or as shocking as Visitor Q(all four of which were directed by Takashi Miike), MPD Psycho is still strange, violent, bloody, and pretty shocking at times(just not as much as the aforementioned films)! If you have never seen a Takashi Miike film before, then this might be a good place to start, as it is not as heavy on violence, blood, or as confusing as some of his films are. If you have seen films Takashi Miike has done before, then this is just as good and really worth checking out. Other Takashi Miike films worth renting: Ichi The Killer, Gozu, Audition, Dead of Alive(all three films), and The Happiness of the Katakuris.

I guess only time will tell whether Takashi Miike holds the answers that we are all looking for, but for now MPD-Psycho continues to comfuse and impress in equal measures. So what do we know?

We have an anti-hero of sorts who has lived in many different bodies, he is searching for answers to questions which remain unclear. Helping him are two bumbling detectives, providing comic relief with their passion for recreating crime scenes with plastic models and a nice sing song... don't ask.

Add to the mix an entertaining array of bad guys with bar code eye balls and the ability to swap bodies through physical contact, phone line or internet access and it is fair to say that Takashi Miike has way too much going on upstairs for his own good.

Episode three guest stars Chiaki Kuriyama of Kill Bill fame, opening with a stunning first act and leaving you with a shocking finale set inside a school. Episode four is tame by comparison. Human bingo, robot dogs and human express delivery. It's what television was made for.
