Both director Alain Berliner and his young star, Georges Du Fresne, make auspicious debuts with this bittersweet tale of sexual confusion and bourgeois prudery. Berliner's clever shifts in colour, as reality intrudes upon the boy's Barbie-doll daydreams, are inspired, and Du Fresne, as the pre-teen convinced he'll eventually become a woman, is so disingenuously trusting that he almost atones for the film's muddled blend of social satire and whimsical fantasy. Prejudices and doubts come and go with unconvincing ease, but mother Michèle Laroque is so delightfully sympathetic that the trite ending has just the right ring of optimism.

A strange but compelling movie about gender and identity, with a remarkable performance from its young protagonist.

Magical, stunning, heartwarming - a must see film

Every once in a while there comes a film that turns out to be a complete knock-out. Ma vie en rose is such a film and although the story seems simple (see review above) it is difficult to find words for this cinematic masterpiece. Apart from the stunning performance by George Du Fresne as Ludovic I would also commend the 'child's eye' camera work throughout the film. Seeing the world through the eyes of a 7 year old boy give a unique perspective not only about his perception of the real and the fantasy world but also puts a mirror to the often hypocritical world around him. This is not film you can watch and forget but you may wonder how you managed to miss it until now.

Unfortunately the DVD does not contain any worthwhile extras but the film is worth every second.

If you are still thinking about getting this DVD stop here and order it now! Your life needs this film!

    hopeless

I rented this title following the positive feedback that had been left for it. I felt I had to write and say how useless this film was. The majority of films I rent from this site are foreign movies and I enjoy most of them. However, I found this film to be tedious watching. The plot trudges on from one ill conceived idea to the next - the kid playing the protagonist is just plain annoying (i found myself routing for the bullies against my better judgement), the structure leads nowhere, and the dream sequences are pathetic. I seriously think a bunch of eager teenagers could have made a better job of it. The idea that other reviewers found this film uplifting and incredible, i think, says more about their lives than it does about the film.

    a fantastic achievement

This is simply a brilliant film that deals with a tough issue. The central premise is of a young boy that knows in his heart that he should have been born as a girl. The central characters are perfectly played, the boy playing Ludovic is just heart-breaking. It can at times be hard to watch but is ultimately incredibly uplifting. 1000 stars out of 10...

Great Film and I hate sub-titles!

Simple plot but moving and well-acted. A portrayal of prejudice and small-mindedness....highlights the important things in life like understanding and compassion.........you dont have to be in a minority to get this film!

    A stunning film.............

about a little boy who would clearly rather be a little girl and the sometimes rather brutal reactions to this. A light touch from the director stops this from turning into a heavy melodrama, but it still manages to pack a good punch.

    Heartbreaking

A first class performance by George Du Fresne as Ludovic, his delivery is superb and absolutly heartbreaking. Strangely, as another reviewer pointed out, I found the film 'American' in style. Still worth a watch tho, much worse ways of spending an hour and a 1/2!

    Beautiful, brave fable

This film should be compulsary viewing for every parent of a small child. Little Ludovic discovers the beauty and truth within his own soul, and everything around him and his family changes. It's a bit fairytale, but this in no way detracts from its massive impact which - in the Gallic way - is still delivered with grace and charm. Stunning performances by little Georges Du Fresne as Ludo and Michele Laroque - a French Natasha Richardson - as the mother torn between her love for her son and the loss of her idyllic suburban life. I hate to call films 'gay' - but this is perhaps the best gay-themed film I have ever seen, and SO many gay people will laugh and cry out loud as they watch it and see their own lives. If ONLY English-language cinema had the guts to produce something like this!!!!!

    brilliant watch it

"Ma Vie en Rose" tells the story of a growing boy trying to learn to fit in to suburban French society and his family trying to understand him. Don't get put off by what could be heavy subject matter or the subtitles; the acting and characterisation and the attention given to the different relationships in the film is brilliant, as is the use of music and the visuals. "Ma Vie en Rose" is a really imaginative, touching and positive film with a strong storyline and a good sense of humour.
