    have seen better versions

This version of Macbeth is an adaptation of the stage play transposed to screen. It is not a film version, and it leaves much to desired. The set is basic and could have added to the atmosphere, but it doesn't. In addition, apart from Jeremy Brett as Macbeth, the acting is not consistent or strong. Lady Macbeth is ok, and she conveys the unbridled ambition of the part early on in the play. But it is hard to believe in her transformation as the play prorgesses. Banquo acquits himself well, but the king of Scotland at the outset, and his two sons, as well as some of the other supporting actors, are weak in their roles. It is possible that the answer is simply that Brett's performance is so electrifying that it is hard to compete when on stage with him. Indeed, it is difficult to take your eyes from him as Macbeth, even when others are speaking. He plays Macbeth as so human and believable, as an ambitious man who believes his chance has come and wishes to take it. But he also manages to portray the conscience which torments Macbeth before his brutal acts and shortly thereafter. He is superb. For Brett's performance alone this play is worth seeing.
