Kathy Lette's bestselling comic novel transfers to the screen with tiresomely over-the-top characters, amateurish direction and a witless script that makes the seventies' Confession films seem like the work of Noël Coward. Anna Friel nails the accent as Australian single mum Maddy, but her gamine looks and limited thespian skills render her character utterly unconvincing. The decent British supporting cast (including Joanna Lumley and Anna Massey) make complete idiots of themselves, while a bunch of D-list British celebs have pointless cameos. If the poor performances and stupid story don't drive you mad, Sara Sugarman's heavy-handed, wacky camerawork should finish the job.
A failed farce that tempts its cast into overacting whenever possible, which is made worse by the clichéd directorial style, full of meaningless flourishes.
Someone tell me why this film was made? Someone tell me why I bother to rent this film? This film is meant to be funny; it ain't. It was a painful 90 minute experience. We all know that Anna Friel can be a good actress, but she is very poor in this film. Her version of the Ozzy accent is extremely poor, after a while it gets on your nerves. The DVD itself contains some special features. A 'making of', some separate interviews and the trailer. I think the Director's Commentary is there, but I can't remember as I didn't bother to check it out, I weren't going to rewatch it. Only in English with no subtitles. If you want to watch this film, watch at your own risk, you've been warned...
I read the book by Kathy Lette a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so I was very much looking forward to receiving the film and I have to say I was terribly disapointed once I had watched it.
It doesn't go into enough detail, so if you won't really understand what is going on. There is hardly any background to the characters at all. The editing is appalling, it chops from one scene to another without really making any sense.
There are some big names in this film which makes me think it is the direction that is at fault, rather than the script!
I would suggest you get the book out of the library instead of renting the film!
