Mad about Mad Men

Picking up 18 months after the first season left off, now in the middle of JFK’s administration, this series goes from strength to strength. The show does not have the pace of a West Wing, or the overlapping labyrinth of stories that The Wire can offer, but this is because the show attempts to capture the “zeitgeist” of the era, profession and culture of 1960’s America that no other show on television can offer. All criticisms that have been thrown at this series (overt prejudice and pace of storyline) are merely reflections of the era, and the series does not attempt to win back Hollywood audiences by letting the little guy win, or quick one-liners. Instead Mad Men creates a world which pulls you into the era, in the same way film masterpieces such as Godfather, Shawshank or Schindler’s List do.
There is also bonus of watching Jon Hamm (who plays the main protagonist Don Draper) produce an immense performance as the driving force behind Stirling Cooper - the Ad Agency where Draper works. Hamm manages to carry the mystery surrounding the past of character – which we learn more of in season 2 - whilst simultaneously appearing as cool as any other character in cinema or film in the last 20 years.
The addition of the realism of the set design – which is perfection, the humour, the supporting storylines that evolve from series one, and overt cultural references which again pulls us into the era - all help to create a show like no other on TV. Like season 1, MM requires a little patience at the start for the story to kick into gear, but it is really worth it.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 09 Nov 2012This series is second only to the Sopranos Same writers I believe and it shows. Brilliant characterisation, great actors,
very evocative of the fifties even if you're too young to remember it. Political in a good way not boring at all. January Jones is a revelation in this as Betty, Don Drapers wife. Don Draper himself is a fascinating mix of moral/immoral. All the main performances stand out and the actor playing Campbell deserves an Oscar for the nasty wheedling cruel jumped up spoilt brat part he plays.- Was this review helpful to you?

Is it a period drama?
By Malefice (31 reviews) from Southampton , 29 Jun 2012It's a good series, there can be no doubt that the attention to detail, acting, and script writing are good, in fact almost all the components to make up a great series but somehow it just misses the mark of greatness for me.
The characters are good, rounded and believable and yet I don't really warm to any of them, which means I don't really care what happens to any of them.
The plot is good and yet strangely not that engaging. Other series where I have to physically stop myself from watching the whole disc at once, this series I can watch one and leave it.
I think it's a new take on the period drama genre. The attention to detail on the sets is excellent, but it lacks charisma and overall is a little dry.
At the moment I'm in two minds whether to bother with the next series and I think on balance I probably won't.- Was this review helpful to you?

Love it, love it, love it......
By Panna (49 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 10 Nov 2011Yet again, another pearl. Watch this and immerse yourself in 1960's era. A slow burner, but that's what I find enjoyable and realistic. Life is not a constant roller coaster and neither is this series, but it slowly draws you in to it's story lines until you can't wait to see the next.

Still Love It
By MattMunro (13 reviews) , 22 Aug 2011Not a huge amount happens in this series, all the characters develop, there are some dramatic events around the SC agency itself and and we learn a lot more about Don Drapers past, and his character in the present, where the focus moves away from just his job. The series does seem to coast a little at times, but that is probably just the wow factor from the first series wearing off a bit. Still love everything about it - especially Betty Draper who has to be one of sexiest female characters ever - and have got all the later series on my list.- Was this review helpful to you?

I'm Struggling!
By a customer , 25 Jul 2011Although i love the screenplay and the individual characters nothing actually happens in this series,same as the first, when you start to think 'oh my something is going to kick off' nothing happens! It lacks serious drama and the wow factor, something that make you sit bolt upright with your mouth wide open, not even the series finale is very exciting.
But for some reason i can't stop watching, so i say give it a gurn. Maybe series 3 will have what i'm looking for!- Was this review helpful to you?
