Charmless animated movie about New Yorkers removed from their natural environment, relying on in-jokes of movie theme tunes (Born Free and the like) to provide amusement.
The animation is visually stunning, and the animals' stylized rendering and friendly look is in keeping with the energetic mood of the movie.
A delightfully wacked new digitally animated comedy....Untamed fun
When Marty escapes from Central Park Zoo, Alex, Melman and Gloria begin a rescue mission to find and return their friend. However, they soon find themselves reunited, but.......on a ship bound for Africa. The ship is hijacked and they inadvertantly get stranded on a strange island. Here they learn what life in the wild is actually like.
A very clever and colourful animation that really is a beautiful piece of work. Lovable characters, great voiceovers and a superb plot means top entertainment for kids with a little for adults mixed in.
An ok animation which could have been improved with some better main characters. Some big names star in this film but are let down by an average script. Without a doubt the penguins and the chimps steal the show, both of whom should have been featured more.
All in all good Sunday afternoon in front of the box fodder.
I loved this film, its funny and I will rent it again when its released on DVD.
The penguins are great, and there are lots of snappy one liners which will appeal to adults. There are a few duff bits, but overall it's worth a watch. Slightly less accomplished than 'Nemo', but miles and miles better than 'Shark Tale'.
Madagascar is the latest adventure to some our way from DreamWorks Animation; a studio that has created such works as Shrek and Shark Tale. DreamWorks’ latest outing did not fail to disappoint but didn‘t quite manage to be great. Madagascar tells the tale of Marty the Zebra, Alex the lion, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe, inhabitants of New York's Central Park Zoo. The story is set in motion when Marty decides to go on a trip to Connecticut, what he believes to be the wild. The others go on a quest to find him which results in a media frenzy and the animals of the zoo being shipped far away, to Africa. After the ship is hijacked by penguins (crazy, I know, but remember, everything‘s possible in animation), our main characters end up stranded on the island of, guess where…Madagascar. This is where the humour really begins. We are introduced to King Julian, voiced by the hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen, and his band of Lemurs. Our first glimpse of the lemurs is one of the most memorable moments in the film; the entire jungle comes to life for an ensemble performance of “I like to move it” lead by King Julian. Sacha Baron Cohen is very impressive in the role of King Julian; he somehow manages to concoct a voice he hasn’t that is in many ways perfect for the big-headed, delusional, King Julian. Madagascar presents a relatively uncommon argument in relation to what animals want. The last thing the zoo animals (particularly Alex) want, is to be in the wild. Fresh air? Living off the land? Why would they want that? Especially when they have steaks and medical care at the zoo. Madagascar is most certainly an original story; it’s a splash of “the grass is always greener” a dash of “be careful what you wish for” and smidge of anthropomorphism. How original can you get? The characters that deserve an honourable mention are definitely the penguin. They’re shifty fellows with delusions of 007hood and they are, essentially, the catalysts for the majority of the events in the film. The casting for the film couldn’t have been better. Ben Stiller voices Alex the lion, it’s interesting to see, or should I say, hear, Stiller in one of the more masculine roles. He’s the king of the jungle, and he pulls it off very well. Marty, the exitable zebra, is voiced by Chris Rock. Naturally, Rock manages to bring that Chris Rock craziness to the role. Arguably the best vocal work comes from David Schwimmer as the hypochondriac giraffe, Melman. He brings Melman’s whininess to life and manages to personalise the role at the same time. A role that didn’t get as much time to develop is that of Gloria, voiced by Jada Pinkett-Smith. She does as much as she could with the role and for that she cannot be faulted, unfortunately , her role simply did not require much. Madagascar is far from perfect. It is, essentially a very simple storyline that requires little to no thought to process. It is because of the this that I class Madagascar as a children’s film that was not necessarily designed two work on two levels for children and adults. It is humorous and entertaining, but repeat viewing (for those aged 13 or above) is not particularly beneficial. Madagascar is a film is strongly recommend, but it fails to live up to the level DreamWorks established with Shrek.
Watched to keep others happy but found it hilarious and a all roung good film, definatly for kids but with added adult humour at times

Its a real shame really, the film is by the same team that brought us, Shrek and Shark Tale, two good family films.
Madagascar on reflection is poor... there is little storyline, few laughs and the animation is in no way up to the high standards of the previously two mentioned films.
Although the film has a strong cast this could not lift the film.
To sum up this film will fade into obsurity quicker than a one hit wonder.
Poor film.
Not funny at all. Can't write anything else as it just wasn't funny but this review box will not accept my 'Not funny at all' review as it is too short. Whatever.
Not the best Dreamworks animation ever, but funny enough with its story of 4 pampered animals at the Central Park Zoo who by a series of mishaps find themselves shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar ruled by fruit loop King Julian, King of the Lemurs.
The penguins steal the show and its a shame they weren't used to pad out the storyline a bit more, as they provide the real laughs. Maybe they'll get their own film - that would be nice.
After Shrek and Finding Nemo, it seemed that DreamWorks could do no wrong. Then along came A Sharks Tale and now Madagascar. Given the standard set by Shrek et al, Id have to say these latest creations are poor.
The intentions behind Madagascar are good and pure, but it seems to drag along, labouring the point of the film which is a typical fish-out-of-water scenario. Finding Nemo was a fish-out-of-water movie (excuse the pun), but it worked beautifully. Madagascar seems to lumber towards something without actually getting there.
Kids will find more to interest them with lots of colour, silly voices and daftness, although saying that, I saw it at the cinema with my 7 year old son and I cant recall him laughing once.
For adults, there are plenty of references to other movies for you to spot. DreamWorks can always be relied on to shove some of these in somewhere, although some of them seem to be forced in there rather than fitting seamlessly into the action as happens in Shrek.
On first viewing, I thought the penguins stole the movie. On second viewing, I thought the King of the Ocelots (Sacha Cohen) stole it. Melman (David Schwimmer) was annoying both times. Overall, a very strong cast of voices its a shame the script didnt rise to meet their talent.
The movie seems to end abruptly too. Ultimately, I would say a weak script brings the whole thing down.
What a disappointment. All the good moments were in the trailers and so had already been viewed. I took two 9yr olds who were rather bored. Not many funny moments and certainly not a patch on Shrek - not in the same league. Don't waste your money at the cinema!
The idea is good, the script is boring. If it wasn't for the actors of the main characters, and those penguins!!! this film wouldn't be worth writing about. My 3yr old loves it, which I suppose is all that matters, but it's not a threat for Shrek, Nemo, Monsters Inc etc etc. A couple of good laughs with the penguins and monkeys, thats about it. Rent it don't buy it.
Although the film is nowhere near the likes of Toy Story and Shrek, it is still a great family film which will have your sides splitting with laughter. A SPECTACULAR FILM!
