Following their success five years before with SWINGERS, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again in MADE, a comedy about two very different down-on-their-luck L.A. friends who get caught up in a dangerous deal in New York City. Favreau stars as Bobby, a hardworking, very serious construction worker who dreams of becoming a boxer and settling down with his stripper girlfriend (Famke Janssen) and her young daughter. Vaughn plays Ricky, an obnoxious ne'er-do-well who thinks that pulling off a big job for boss Max (Peter Falk) will be their ticket to the big time. The duo is sent off to New York to take part in a deal they know nothing about; while Bobby waits calmly for them to be discreetly contacted, Ricky never shuts his mouth, barking orders at random people, flashing his green and his wry smile all over town, annoying the heck out of everyone he meets, especially Ruiz (Sean "P-Diddy" Combs), who is their connection. The film is beautifully shot by master cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who recently filmed Wong Kar-Wai's stunning IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. Bobby and Ricky make the perfect pair; Favreau is often silent in scenes, watching deadpan as Vaughn steals the show as the brazen, overbearing, but lovable Ricky. To lend authenticity to the film, Favreau shot it in such landmarks as Hollywood High, Tavern on the Green, and the Central Park Zoo, and he hired SOPRANOS stars Vincent Pastore (Big Pussy), Federico Castelluccio (Furio), and Drea de Matteo (Adriana) to further the mob connection. The film was coproduced by Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in 1983's beloved A CHRISTMAS STORY.

Like Swingers, the first film to co-star Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, Made explores the dual themes of male friendship and loyalty. Unlike Swingers, a little crowd-pleaser which was one of the gems of 1996, this comedy is less of a success. Containing an uncharacteristically showy performance by Vaughn, Made irritates and annoys where Swingers charmed and beguiled. Vaughn and Favreau play boxing buddies who moonlight as muscle for the local Mob. When they're sent on simple courier duty to New York, it's a recipe for trouble. Favreau just wants to get the job done, and then get back to keeping other people's paws off stripper girlfriend Famke Janssen. Vaughn, by contrast, sees the job as his chance to take a step up the Mob hierarchy. Contrasting ambitions lead to Laurel and Hardy-style humour, with Favreau underplaying it as a resigned, long-suffering Ollie and Vaughn overplaying it as a hyped-up, hyperkinetic Stan. It's all far less funny to watch than it probably was to make. Swingers effortlessly had it made. Made, sadly, just doesn't swing at all.

Swingers fans beware....!
Those of you expecting a sequel, or in fact, something that even slightly resembles the fantastic 'Swingers' should be warned, you'll be left disappointed. The only similarities lie in the main cast, but unfortunately even Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau can't save this one.
The story revolves around two guys bungling up there one oppertunity to make something of themselves, and although it has some slick dialogue, funny moments, and a sometimes great soundtrack, overall it just doesn't come together very well.
Perhaps I'm unfair because of the expectations I had of it, being a devoted 'Swingers' fan, but 'Made' is not in the same league. It's clumsy and at times annoying and dull, but may be worth a chance for the few magic Vaughn/Favreau moments that make these two such an enjoyable pair to watch. -

For fans of Swingers
I took a while to get round to watching this one mainly because I feared it would just be a recycled version of 'Swingers'. However this does enough to exist as a film in its own right. Sure there are paralells between the two films, the main leads and the wisecracking and tomfoolery will ensure that fans of Swingers enjoy this but also that those who haven't seen Swingers (which they should) can equally enjoy the film for it's mixture of drama and comedy.
The chemistry between the two leads and the characterisation is the big positive of this film and good support is offered by Peter Falk amongst others although P Diddy doesn't do as much with his good part in the film as he should.
Vince Vaughan pretty much steals the film, playing on the annoying factor to just the right degree and his obnoxious arrogance is balanced by Favreau's tired acceptance of their given situation.
I was torn between a 4 and 5 and would probably give it a 4.5 if possible, but I'm gonna push it up to a 5 for Vaughan's big mouth antics and the good soundtrack. -
