The creators of NOIR continue their tradition of girls with guns and mysterious pasts in the action-packed anime series MADLAX. Racked by 12 years of civil war, the country of Gazth-Sonika is overrun by armed rebels, spies, assassins, and covert organisations that take advantage of the chaos to ply their wares. Shadowy profit-seekers thrive in the unstable environment, including Friday Monday, the masked leader of the criminal Enfant intelligence group; and sexy female assassin Madlax, who sells her mercenary skills with the help of a mystery contact known only as SSS. Meanwhile, rich orphan schoolgirl Margaret Burton lives miles away in the peaceful country of Nafrece, in many ways a normal high school student except for haunting dreams and memory lapses that hint at a hidden connection between herself and Madlax. Melancholy and suspenseful, the Anime series chronicles the parallel destinies of its two heroines with stunning action animation and atmospherics.

I came accross this title a few years ago, and looking at the front cover I simply assumed 'meh, its a Noir rehash' and never gave it another thought. That is, until a little while ago when my friend lent me her copy of the Madlax OST and I realised that a show with music that beautiful might just be worth watching. So into the DVD player went a rental copy, and I was not diappointed. Please don't make the same mistake I did and assume this s simply a Noir re-take-because it isn't. Yes, they are stylistically similar but in other ways they are world apart(pretty much in the way that Champloo can be compared to Bebop). Madlax is very mysterious, and despite being action-packed there is a great amount of humour, a wonderful cast of interesting and likeable characters and a certain sensuality about Madlax (the assassin herself) that other 'girls with guns' anime have lacked. The music, as previously mentioned, is up on par with other Yuki Kajiura scores such as .Hack// and Tsubasa Chronicle-in other words, its totally gorgeous. This is an OST you want to own.
It is also unique in that the two main characters won't even meet eachother until over halfway through the series! Very compelling viewing. And on a lighter note, the extras include the deliciously funny 'Conversation with SSS', in which the ADV cast really shine as Margaret gets a call from a stalker-who threatens to mix a red sock in with her laundry-and Carrosea Doon wishes he'd sold someone's kidney on Ebay. Its pure gold, and I've come to look forward to this segment of extras more than the main feature itself.
Madlax is a wonderful show and I look forward to seeing it through to the end-please don't dismiss it due to its outside appearance of a Noir clone, because you'll be missing one of the best anime out there.
Enjoy! :) ~
Good animated fun for teenagers really
