    Madness gone mad

An entertaining a quite spooky study of a madman reduced to conversing, and taking instructions from, a ventriloquist dummy. You can see why Hopkins was eventually cast as Hannibal; There's something oddly unsettling about him. Love the final scene, very odd; is there a suggestion that the Anne Margaret character is similarly unhinged??

Was far scarier when I was a kid

I remember watching this film when I was between 12 and 15 and I remember being terrified. The ending always haunted me and I thought about 'magic' many a time whenever I reflected on films that were truly scary compared to what is out these days.

Anyway, what a disappointment. There is no doubt that Hopkins provides a great performance as a man with extreme psychological issues, but the tension and fear I experienced as a child was no longer there.

I would recommend this to any Hopkins fan, or lover of psychological thrillers albeit without the special effects of today.
