I think I have fallen in love. I have fallen in love with Italian cinema. And who can blame me? Having loved Giuseppe Tornatore's 'Cinema Paradiso' I decided to try another one of his films, and 'Malena' was it.

Malena isn't as good as Cinema Paradiso but don't let that put you off. It's like when I review a lot of amazing Billy Wilder films, obviously they're not as good as 'The Apartment' but that doesn't stop them from being awesome films.

This film is a little more realistic than Paradiso, perhaps a little more cynical.. yet it's still a wonderful, thought-provoking look into the brilliant Italian culture.

The cinematography is beautiful, the acting is perfect.. you will find yourself glued to the screen throughout. Nobody does these stories better than Tornatore.. the film is so gentle yet so effective, it's spell on you is incredible. It's like- well, remember the first time you saw Shawshank Redemption? This film is like that; it just leaves you feeling completely fulfilled.. and has me wondering why I really bother watching Hollywood films. This is a perfect picture; the Italians have remembered to do the thing which the rest of the world isn't, TELL A STORY. And this story is enchanting and compelling.

    Please watch this.

I also recommend 'Cinema Paradiso' and 'I'm Not Scared'

In a small Sicilian town in 1941, a beautiful young widow has the local male population in a complete frenzy and their wives spitting venom. A boy on the cusp of manhood appoints himself her secret protector/lover, but he is powerless to prevent her complete ostracisation, which results in fraternisation with the Germans, disgrace and exile. Beautiful looking movie, another magical Morricone score, excellent central performances and as with CinePara, a wonderful collection of comic characters. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work. The role of Malena is never developed enough for us to really care for her and the playful first half doesn't gel with the brutal realism of later scenes. A real shame.

An interesting coming of age yarn about a young man's obsession with a beautiful woman i his small Sicilian town during WW2.

Whilst its a bit slow & tedious in the middle, this is not a bad example of a romanctic period film.

    Worth a look.

  • War and Peace Sicilian Style

The Sicilian drama is played out with tenderness and affection, while revealing the weaknesses of men and women and their penchant for jealousy ,gossip , vengeance, and forgiveness .Monica Bellucci is stunning as Malena, the loving housewife who becomes victim of circumstance, with acting to match her beauty, and Guiseppe Sulfaro as Renato Amoroso recounts the story of village life , dreamy infatuation, early sexual stirrings, and growing up, against the backdrop of the looming war of the axis powers, a volte face of alliances, occupation, liberation, and the eventual resumption of village life.

Beautifully filmed with admirable acting, the film is so visual that even if you don’t speak Italian, and only periodically glance at the subtitles, the unfolding story tells itself with moving sensitivity.

The other side to Catch 22. There's black and even brown shirts. Classic Italian film worthy of Amarcord, with dashes of Conformist. Gangster story of life under government protection.

Monica Bellucci was so elegant, seductive, feminine and alluring.

She was silent for most of the film but it didnt make her scenes any less pleasing to watch

The young boy was a brilliant actor, very realistic in his portrayal of boy entering and exploring manhood.

One part of the film was very upsetting, I wasn't expecting it, so found it quite intense.

Very powerful, witty and sweet film
