Beginning of the end for the Iron Curtain
By a customer from Harrow , 11 Sep 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
A good movie with a historical and political background, Man of Iron is a film set in 1980 and directed by Andrzej Wajda, who wanted to show the trouble with Communism in Poland.
The movie introduces the viewers to the political situation of the country and the fight with the hypocritical system. The strike in the Gdansk shipyard is the herald of the new era which begins ten years later across Eastern Europe. The story is of Maciej Tomczyk, a young worker involved in the free trade union movement, and is intended as a parallel to Lech Walesa (who appears as himself in the movie.)- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)Man of Iron needed to get through this
By Oldbloke (308 reviews) from Sidmouth , 08 Mar 2011An alcoholic reporter on state radio is recruited by the Polish authorities to infiltrate the famous shipyard trade union movement and discredit it's principal members. However, it is not long before his former radical sympathies start to return. This is more of a historical document and a tribute to the fallen than an enjoyable cinematic experience. How Wajda got it made under the noses of the old regime is a mystery. Unfortunately, only in the last section does he bring the vital human element to the fore, which after nearly two hours of arguments and speeches was too little too late for me.- Was this review helpful to you?
