This fine, relentlessly grim western was given scant critical approval on its original release. Made after director Anthony Mann's marvellous series of James Stewart movies, this study of choice and injustice stars Gary Cooper, whose haggard, ageing features lend the tale an almost biblical intensity. Mann's use of CinemaScope is exemplary (it always was), although the sometimes savage story was originally the victim of the censor's scissors, particularly the rape of saloon singer Julie London. The screenplay, by 12 Angry Men writer Reginald Rose, is highly literate, and Lee J Cobb's ferocious study in villainy is wonderful to watch. Be warned, this is no ordinary Wild West tale, and may not be to everyone's taste.

One of the very best

Anthony Mann's outstanding farewell to the western is a great movie in its own right, moving remorselessly through a thrilling plot about a man unable to escape his own past, but it's more than that: it's nothing less than a commentary on the entire genre. Starting with its hero as an apparently upright member of society, looking for a schoolteacher for his remote settlement, the film gradually strips away the layers of civilization, moving backwards through the brutality of the old west, and some pretty extreme violence, until the green pastures of the first half are replaced by the familiar desert, and,finally, by a ghost town inhabited by a couple of Indians. A ruthless, unforgiving tale that provides both intellectual and visceral entertainment.
