An old-fashioned, full-blooded, non-ironic World War II movie... Despite elements of darkness and depth, it's a stirring, often uplifting story in which you never cease to feel involved... It's easy to see why this has become the most successful Norwegian movie ever
The film is a thrilling, old-fashioned tale of derring-do that balances tense action sequences with more personal insights into Manus and the many comrades who fell along the road to victory in Europe
An ambitious blend of wartime action blockbuster and character drama... the production values of this Norwegian-made picture are top-notch and the acting is strong
MMMOW kicks off with a battle piece, set in Finland, the photography of which reminded me a little of Saving Private Ryan - it doesn't last 24 minutes though. The film then proceeds to tell the story of Max's somewhat corpse strewn journey from being a rank amateur resistance fighter in Nazi occupied Norway to being a thoroughly professional one.
A good mix of action, dialogue and a small amount of love interest all coupled with decent casting and photography makes for enjoyable viewing.
Even my better half, who normally eschews war movies, wandered in during the latter 3rd of the film and stayed to watch until the end.
As usual I browsed through the extras and I recommend that one watches the documentary piece first to understand who the actual people are and how, both, they and certain events are portrayed by the director.
It is the extraordinary story of the Oslo Gang, well known in Norwegian war history, who resisted the Nazi occupation, many of them paying with their lives. Think of them every time the Christmas tree is lit in Trafalgar Square.
An outstanding and gripping movie and a fine tribute to these brave men.
Must be one of the best war films - based on true events - ever made. You even forget the sub-titles soon into the film. No one actor tries to be bigger than the story and the story-telling format will keep you riveted. Makes you think how you would have reacted in similar circumstances! Avoids the macho, simplistic efforts of similar films. Being brave, while afraid, comes at a high personal cost even for those who make it. The film captures this delicate balance - spot on!

did not think much of the film not my type very slow
excellant story about what can happen to countries in a war.
A really well made film from Norway, which if you dont mind subtitles is well worth a watch. Well directed, acted and written, full of action but also managing to give you a real feeling of how it must have felt to have lived in an occupied country during the war. Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
had read his book before finding out they had made a film, very good true story, documentary on disc excellent
A refreshing addition to a genre dominated by films depicting british and american exploits. Max Manus relays the true life story of a legendary norwegian resistance fighter, battling against the german occupation of his homeland. Aswell as dramatising the acts of sabotage, the film successfully portrays the camaraderie that existed in his group - many of whom died in the conflict. Excellent watch.
It is all in subtitles -
may be I should have know, it looked like a good film but for me I can't watch and read at the same time LOL !

A tense drama of the deadly cat-and-mouse between the resistance and the Nazis
A well-acted, impeccably tasteful study of Norway's greatest war hero
The emotive punch of the film is perfectly tailored to the hazy facts
