In a remarkable and touching performance, Jim Carrey tones down his usual idiosyncrasies to play late avant garde comedian Andy Kaufman in MAN ON THE MOON. In life, Kaufman was a complex, controversial, and, at times, insane performer, and Carrey captures this, as well as the subtle nuances of his more toned-down private life. .. Read more

The non-conforming, self-destructive career of comedian Andy Kaufman (who found fame as the squeaky-voiced Latka in the 1980s sitcom Taxi) is re-created by Jim Carrey and director Milos Forman in this challenging, off-the-wall biography. Carrey is Kaufman, and he gives everything he's got to Andy's provocative, manipulative stage performances. In an audacious piece of casting, Kaufman's Taxi co-star Danny DeVito portrays his understanding manager, and he too is first-rate. From the bizarre credits scene onwards, Forman keeps the audience unsure of how to perceive Kaufman, a decision that has prompted some critics to complain he does not allow enough insight into the off-stage Andy. That is perhaps the point of the movie, however: after all, you never knew when he had stopped performing.

An intriguing story of an unusual and uncomfortable talent, with a good performance from Carrey; those who were never exposed to Kaufman's comedy are likely to need more convincing that he is worth this elaborate treatment.

    Proof that Carrey can act

During the mid to late 90s Jim Carrey represented the gurning face of American comedy. The likes of ?Ace Ventura? and ?The Mask? made him a household name and one of the best paid ?actors? in Hollywood.

Why do I put ?actor? in commas? Because until the likes of ?The Truman Show? and, in my opinion, the superior ?Man in the Moon?, Carrey had done little to distinguish himself as an actor.

?Man in the Moon? is a biography of comedian Andy Kaufman whose strange sense of humour made him equally loved and hated. His most famous role was a recurring part in the TV series ?Taxi?. Before Kaufman can become mega famous he is diagnosed with cancer and hunts for a cure.

Carrey plays Kaufman with plenty of sympathy and seems to really respect the talent the man had. He acts better than in any of his films to date and it?s easy to see why he is being offered more meaty roles like ?Eternal Sunshine?. If you where a fan of that movie then ?Man in the Moon? is for you as Carrey?s face pulling is not on show here.

A very good biopic of an interesting man.

    "Thank you very much"

This film wins you over on 2 levels - firstly Jim Carrey's amazing performance which by the end of the film leaves you checking to make sure he got an academy award. At first you think this must have been an easy job to goof around but then realise that in order to capture the character you need to approach the humour from a very calculated and subtle level.

The 2nd level is the actual character of Andy which you grow to enjoy/appreciate by the end of the film without the film maker using cheap tricks such as incidental music.

This film will either go over your head or leave you wanting more!

Don't be put off by the first 10 mins which is annoying and slow. The film quickly gathers pace.

Brilliant editing, dialogue and acting. Brilliant timing and it's obvious all involved are doing this for the love of movie making.

Contrary to other movies this is one which could have done with 20 or so minutes more edited back into the film. It's just under 2 hours long but leaves you thinking it was rushed a little towards the end. Superb.

    Enjoy.

The light side of the moon....

Given the many negative comments posted here, it would appear that the majority of viewers were either expecting a slapstick Jim Carrey flick or an in-depth study of Andy Kaufman?s life. However what you actually get is more of a loving tribute to Kaufman?s ?unique? personality, with his bizarre exploits being superbly acted out by the unerringly accurate Carrey. Of course given that so many of Kaufman?s former acquaintances were involved in the film?s production the portrayal is somewhat rose-tainted, but for me that just added to its appeal. Whether you will enjoy the film will of course depend entirely on how you view of Kaufman?s off-the-wall antics and he certainly held a love-hate relationship with the American public. But then that?s what Kaufman was all about ? drawing a reaction, positive or negative, from the crowd and that?s where Kaufman?s talents lay. A thoroughly enjoyable 4.5/5. (Not sure what extras are on the R2 disc since I watched it on R1)

    Superb acting from Jim Carrey

Now this review may sound very biased, in the sense that not only is Jim Carrey my favourite actor but this is my favourite film of all time. However I will attempt to remove my judgements from this review. Firstly in order to fully appreciate this film you should look up some of 'Andy Kaufman's' work and decide whether his type of act is for you (I have deliberately used the word act instead of comedy because that is what it is, he is a song and dance man). Once you have decided if you like him then you might see how good a performance Jim Carrey has put on. Many of the Actors in this film have played significant roles in Andy's real life, which is a great testament to how much they appreciated and loved him. If you are a fan of Jim Carrey then you should love this film, and if you are a fan of Andy Kaufman try not to look at it like a biography and more of a tribute towards him. If you are a fan of neither, then maybe this isn't for you (however my best mate hates Jim Carrey and still loves this film).

    Surprisingly good

I only had vague memories of Andy Kaufman from Taxi before watching this film, but the script brought his fascinating story to life. I was pleasantly surprised by Jim Carey - hadn't really been a fan of his gurning previously. He works his butt off trying to get the character right and, having since seen more footage of Kaufman, I think he does a commendable job.

There is also a very strong supporting cast, including, somewhat surprisingly, Courtney Love as Kaufman's girlfriend. There are a few weak moments, but all in all, it is a clever, funny and unusual story that shows an alternative view of American popular culture.

    top of the class

I suspect a lot of Jim Carrey fans will be a bit dissapointed with this film, particularly the younger ones. However, I rate this as probably his most rounded performance. He has taken on the role of a

comedian who was well before his time and made it his own. Congratulations jimmy boy!

    thank you very much...

well, i don't know anything about Andy Kaufman and, judging from this film, it seems that not many people really knew him. I couldn't work out whether he was a complete goofball or a comedy genius. But, just like Communism and Facism, I am sure there is a blurry line between the two anyway! Throughly enjoyed the film, although am not sure whether I would have actually found his 'routine', if you can call it that, funny. That probably makes me a pleb, but hey. Would have been nice to see some real Kaufman footage in the film at the end or something to see what he was like.
