Tried this out because I wanted to see what else Richard Ayoade had done besides the wondrous IT Crowd. It was interesting to see Matthew Holness's other characterisations besides pompous ass Garth Marenghi, which was the only one I already knew.

Man to Man was enjoyable enough, if a little patchy. Some episodes worked better than others and watching them back to back didn't really help, as it emphasised the repetiveness of the format. However, that's probably true for most comedy shows and it shouldn't be a deterrent. Give this one a go, there are some very funny moments.

if you enjoyed darkplace by garth merengue (may be spelt wrong) you will prob enjoy this also. Only rented out of curiosity as friend introduced me to darkplace.

its the little nuonces that i also found amusing, e.g charector dean learners body language. would have liked to have seen charactors done by other actors from darkplace but the guy who does garth marengue in my opinion is good and amuses.

  • As much a criticism of LoveFilm...

that this gets a bad rating. No where on the details page does it tell you that this is NOT a film! Even when I realised it was a TV series, I still hoped it would be worth watching. Sadly, it's just 6 episodes of toilet humour and crass jokes for teenagers. If I want to hire a TV series that I've never heard of, that was probably originally aired at midnight, and, I imagine, wasn't recommissioned past the first series, I'll go to LOVEUnfunnyTVSeries.com. I guess it's too much effort for LOVEFiLM to include a category on their listings so I'm going to have to be more careful in future...

  • Disappointing

I thought the best bits of garth marenghi's darkplace was the talking heads between the scenes (which were a bit too clever-clever and pop-culture referencing for my liking). I then had high hopes for man to man. The inclusion of a studio audience is a big mistake - it plays for as many laughs as possible without letting the characters breathe. But there are not nearly enough laughs. Some characters work better than others, the actor Randolph Caer is one of the best. But, overall, it comes across as a substand Knowing Me, Knowing You.

  • Dissapointing DVD

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

I rented this DVD out based on the fact that I loved Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (which also features the character Dean Learner) and having watched this, I was left slightly dissapointed.

Each episode is essentially a talk show between Dean, and his guest (played in every episode by Matthew Holness, who played the title role in Darkplace). the first guest is Garth marenghi and is quite funny, although a few of the jokes are a bit hit and miss. The series seems to improve with each episode, although my favourite episode is the second one as it features a spoof og the hits how 'The Apprentice' where Dean plays Sir Alan Sugar.

In conclusion, i would recommend this to any diehard Darkplace fan wanting to see more of the character of Deabn Learner. Otherwise, i would rent out darkplace instead, which is far superior in terms of writing.
