Man of Aran

An interesting and rather poetic reconstruction of Aran in the late 19th century but documentary it is not.
The camera carefully avoided imaging the extensive agriculture practised in the islands at the time and ignored commerce entirely although it is clear that the community was far from self-sufficient. Most of the action was rehearsed, the shark fishing industry collapsed same forty years before the film was made and so, presumably, the processing of the shark was omitted because nobody did it or knew how to do it. I would have preferred a more honest account.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Robert Flaherty - Documentarian or poet?
By zorilla (221 reviews) from Kew, Richmond , 30 Jul 2011This is what DVD is all about -
Whether it's documentary or not (it isn't) Man Of Aran is still an important film that needs to be preserved and available for future generations, but this disc offers so much more than that.
The extras include a film made by a crew that went back to Aran in the 60's to find out what the islanders had to say about the film 30 plus years after it was made.
There's also unused footage that shows exactly how Flaherty created the scenarios he wanted to shoot as well as a couple of short films made by Flaherty at around the same time.
As somebody says in one of the documentaries, Robert Flaherty may not be the father of documentary film making, but there's a very good argument that he's the father of film as poetry - and everything on this DVD helps to fight that case most convincingly- Was this review helpful to you?

Man of Aran
By a customer , 20 May 2011A very one-sided 'documentary'. I found the extras on the DVD far more informative and interesting. The extras showed life on the island 40 years on and two short films by Flaherty- Was this review helpful to you?
