A harrowing but magnificent depiction of the cruelty and madness of slavery
By BigMeUp (281 reviews) from Midlands, UK , 06 Mar 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Harrowing - and dare I say, _realistic_ depiction of the slave owning South; the cruelty, the stupidity, the greed.
The film delivers subtle nuances, so that the slave-owning whites are not the sole representatives of the disagreeable and the wicked. In a dog-eat-dog world, perhaps it can be understood why the biggest dog is also the most vicious.
Ultimately, Mandingo is a sad tale of human misery, brought on by ignorance and iniquity. Like the decrepit Falconhurst itself, this a moribund and gloomy tale set in atmospheric splendour and false magnificence.
I strongly recommend.- Was this review helpful to you?
