    a real tearjerker!

I clearly remember watching this film as a child and it made a big impression on me. The story of a little girl who is born profoundly deaf; and the struggle her family goes through whilst trying to educate her. Mandy Miller was an excellent little actress and I guarantee for the final scene, there won't be a dry eye in the house!!!

    realistically heart-wrenching look at disabilty

This works as an historical document showing how disabilities such as deafness were looked at in the 1950's and compare it to the acceptance of it today and yet there are sure to be other areas of society that have the same pariah status now which will be thought of as shocking in 50 years time. A deaf girl becomes involved in a tug-of-love between her mother who finds a school which will enable her to mix in with society and the father and his mother who want to keep her in isolation. Using genuine deaf children gives the film a strong argument for what they can achieve when given the right environment and the lead girl Mandy does exceptionally well and frankly if you don't feel for her anger and frustration at not being able to communicate then you are heartless. There are some side stories about politics on the running of the school and accusations of infidelity but is the children who win the day.
