Woody Allen and Diane Keaton join forces again in this charming riff on such murder mystery classics as REAR WINDOW, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, and THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI. Allen and Keaton play Larry and Carol Lipton, a New York couple reevaluating their life together after their only son goes off to college. Carol thinks they have fallen into a boring life, but when one of their neighbors suddenly dies, Carol starts wondering if foul play was involved. Thrust further into the mystery by their friends Ted (Alan Alda) and Marcia (Anjelica Huston), the Liptons soon find themselves in the middle of murder and mayhem, with their relationship--as well as their lives--hanging in the balance. Seeing Allen and Keaton interact onscreen again, after a hiatus of several years, is a joy. The film moves at a fast pace, with Allen's trademark fabulous shots of New York landmarks. But the ending, which marvelously mimics the famous ending from Orson Welles's THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, is a tour de force that should not be missed.

Written over a decade before it eventually reached the screen, this lightweight comedy clearly bears the hallmark of being an uncontentious romp that would keep Woody Allen occupied while he awaited his day in court with ex-partner Mia Farrow. Another couple of hours pounding away at the typewriter clearly wouldn't have gone amiss, but this is a hugely enjoyable little film that slyly mocks the pretensions of Manhattan's well-heeled intelligentsia. The role originally intended for Farrow is taken with typical Annie Hall-ness by Diane Keaton, and the ease with which she and Allen combine leaves you longing for just one more reunion. Anjelica Huston and Alan Alda provide practised support.
"...This confection keeps the chuckles coming....As neurotic a farce as can be imagined, and Allen and Brickman have amusingly festooned the plot with an array of topical and psychological concerns..."
This film is a hidden gem amonst Woody Allen's prolific output. The basic premise is that Allen's wife played by Diane Keaton is suspcious of her neighbour after his wife dies. She thinks that he had something to do with her murder and begins an amateur investigation along with the reluctant Allen. A bit like Rear Window with lots of jokes.
The dynamic between Allen and Keaton is a joy to watch, they have a great rapport and make a great husband and wife. Some of the writing and situations are so good you don't fully appreciate them till a 2nd viewing.
Alan Alda and Anjelica Houston also offer excellent support, if you love Woody Allen films you will really enjoy this one.
one of my favourite woody allen films. great dialogue as always, very interesting story with some very tense un-allen like moments of action. great stuff.
