A bewilderingly successful comedy — it even inspired a sequel — about a sculptor (Andrew McCarthy) who falls for a shop window dummy (Kim Cattrall). To everybody else, however, Cattrall is just an ordinary mannequin, which obviously makes for a rather tricky romance. It's a premise that requires a light, frothy touch, but director Michael Gottlieb instead takes it as a cue for some helpless mugging and crude slapstick. McCarthy is even more plastic than Cattrall, Meshach Taylor is a gruesome caricature as his sympathetic co-worker, while James Spader simply looks embarrassed.
"...McCarthy is a charming ne'er-do-well and ripe with enough personality to venture down any number of quirky, unexpected paths..."
this dvd is superb. Jonathan Switcher (Andrew McCarthy) is an artist who is struggling to hold down a job; but when a mannequin that he created comes to life he quickly becomes the most wanted window dresser in the city.
Kim Cattrall is the simply stunning fibreglass femme fatale he created, and Jonathan is soon smitten with her magical, statuesque beauty; but the competition want him out of the business, for good.
This movie is exquisitely charming throughout, and it's sprinkled with plenty of comedy moments and characters.
My daughter loved Meshach Taylor as Hollywood Montrose, the very camp window dresser who takes Jonathan under his wing.
well worth watching.
This is a classic 80's film - easy watching, great 80's characters (check out Hollywood, the camp window dresser!). Definatley one to watch on a Sunday afternoon.
