A 'Safe' choice...
By x7rmd from Surrey , 31 Mar 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
A gritty conspiracy flick featuring a young Hoffman as a student haunted by the suicide of his father and murder of his brother.
He quickly finds himself mixed up in a situation that he (let alone the viewer) struggles to understand. I say this as I still don't know the answer to the films memorable question, 'Is it safe?'
The film hit the cinemas the same year I was born which only strengthens my thoughts that '76 was a good year.
Overall, it has real depth and kept me engaged for the whole of its 125 minute duration without having to resort to today's standard fair of over the top special effects or dumbed down plotline.
Without wanting to spoil too much of the plot, it did nothing to lessen my dislike of the dentist...- Was this review helpful to you?

By Roddenberry (31 reviews) from Bristol , 15 Mar 2013The pacing and effects belay the films age, but if you can see past these minor niggles, you'll find a good story that is well-acted by its stars.- Was this review helpful to you?

A classic movie
By sailbatten (64 reviews) from London , 11 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Marathon Man contains an all time classic scene when Hoffman finds himself being interrogated by Laurence Olivier playing twisted Nazi dentist Dr. Christian Szell.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good even though it's old
By Chantal (1104 reviews) from London , 07 Jan 2012A bit silly at times but a good suspense keeps you want to know what will happen next. One scene is particularly intense and disturbing even though they suggest more than they show. The way it should be.- Was this review helpful to you?

Too safe
By MickeyOnePunchONeil (23 reviews) from Belfast , 12 Jul 2011Overall I wasnt really impressed with this movie.
The narrative could have grabbed some real headlines because anything to do with Nazi war criminals is always going to cause some controversy and debate, but the storyline turned out to be more bark and less bite with the eventual coming together of the different plots reaching a moderately entertaining but unsatisfactory conclusion.
I dont think Dustin Hoffman covered himself in glory either as his character again had the potential to be really strong and interesting but the lack of depth and exploration into his association and similarities with the actual Marathon Man, who we see short clips of from time to time, and his unbelievable fulfilment of the role let that aspect of the movie down as well.- Was this review helpful to you?
