    [Highly rated reviewer]

My excuse for having seen this film last night would be that I got free tickets. But in truth, I was kind of looking forward to it. I love the talent - Wilson, Annistion, Arkin and Kathleen Turner.

But what I saw was a banal, dramaless, confusing, over-long, over-sentimental waste of film stock which begs the question - how did this script ever get made!?

The bad-dog andrex advert montages wear thin almost immediately even for any dog lovers watching. And without those montages there isn't reallly a film or story. Wilson's character sort of, kind of, half moans about being half contented with his (idyllic) life. The film consistently hits the wrong tone and doesn't know whether it wants to be a family drama or a no-brained comedy. My suggestion to potential viewers would be to make sure brain and familly stay far away from this film.

There are a few moments of brief redemption brought about by the reliable delivery of the afore-mentioned stars. But why in the name of Lassie are they wasting their talent on this big pile of doo-doo???

I rented this for my wife and wasn't expecting much from it. However it was actually not too bad.No end of the world. No mass killings. In other words a pleasant change. It does meander a bit but it will resonate with anyone who has had a dog as a pet for any length of time. The two leads have appeared in much better films and the trailers give the impression that it has more humour. However on a snowy weekend evening I have seen worse.

  • Not as good as the book

I read Marley and Me, and LOVED the book, however, this movie is more of a romantic comedy about the people rather than the companionship and friendship between a man and his dog. I was disappointed with how little the dog was actually featured. Marley was not the endearing dog he was in the book...
