[Highly rated reviewer]My excuse for having seen this film last night would be that I got free tickets. But in truth, I was kind of looking forward to it. I love the talent - Wilson, Annistion, Arkin and Kathleen Turner.
But what I saw was a banal, dramaless, confusing, over-long, over-sentimental waste of film stock which begs the question - how did this script ever get made!?
The bad-dog andrex advert montages wear thin almost immediately even for any dog lovers watching. And without those montages there isn't reallly a film or story. Wilson's character sort of, kind of, half moans about being half contented with his (idyllic) life. The film consistently hits the wrong tone and doesn't know whether it wants to be a family drama or a no-brained comedy. My suggestion to potential viewers would be to make sure brain and familly stay far away from this film.
There are a few moments of brief redemption brought about by the reliable delivery of the afore-mentioned stars. But why in the name of Lassie are they wasting their talent on this big pile of doo-doo???

Should be a 12 not PG?By a customer , 09 Mar 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI hadn't read the book, but we all love dogs, so I thought this would be a good family film. We all enjoyed it, but I think it should be rated higher than PG, as there are lots of references to sex. It's very true to life, so I had to do quite a bit of explaining about the process of pregnancy (kids aged 10 and 12) and the ending reduced us all to tears. Great dog actors though!
Great !!!!!By a customer , 12 Sep 2012It's a great film, but it's very sad other than that very funny. It's also really enjoyable to !!!! :D
A very pleasant filmBy SandraJoy (10 reviews) from Leicester , 18 Jul 2012Having read the book, I was looking forward to seeing this. As always it didn't quite live up to expectations. However it was a pleasant film to watch, very funny in parts (especially the dog training scene) and of course the expected sad ending. Worth watching on an evening when the TV schedule is rubbish.
