The opening credits state “based on a novel by Agatha Christie” but the only thing they used was the characters names and minor details, the whole plot was completely different from the original book! Plus the main fact that this book isn’t a Marple mystery!!!

Sorry ITV if you do an Agatha Christie, actually do an Agatha Christie. I know screenwriting is difficulty, but don’t change everything. If your screenwriter was that good they you be an author in their own right!!!

Even a Rik Mayall, bottom style punch & hit couldn’t save this one from only 1 star!

    I was very disappointed!

I rented this to check out the lovely Hannah Murray, who some will know as Cassie from Skins. She has a small role in this as the daughter in a dodgy aristo family with a secret to hide. However, she's ditched the flower child look and has black hair pinned up and hornrimmed spectacles, so she's against type. She does okay but her diction could do with improvement. The female teacher from Skins Series 1 shows up too, briefly.

It's a star-studded cast: Rik Mayall, Samantha Bond, Warren Clarke, Richard Briers, Ralf Little (Fast Show) but only Mayall and Little acquit themselves well, and otherwise it's hard to suspend disbelief. Marple takes a back seat to two young lovebirds investigating a clifftop murder, as the ageing sleuth wasn't even in the original Christie book. Way too much exposition and a horribly convoluted plot sink this. It has a a touch of the amatuer dramatics and Christie or not, it's sub-Midsomer Murders.

Murder is Easy was desperately in need of what looked like a weak spring sun to take the chill off a decidedly cooling experience. The acid test for me is whether I would watch it again and in this case it is a resounding NO. The unpleasant creepy plot changes and a lukewarm romance involving the character Bridget spoiled it, (the actress who played her seems to have had a charisma by-pass). I generally like Julia McKenzie and she does bring a forceful quality to Miss Marple but whether due to her performance or a weakness of the script her inquiries were as subtle a a sledgehammer. High points would have to be the light easy charm of Russell Tovey as the constable, injecting much needed humour: the very charismatic Benedict Cumberbatch and the brilliant Shirley Henderson.

A wonderful production! Ian Carmichael is just right for the role , and, although people's social attitudes have changed since the book was written, it and the film are quite right for the timein which it was set: the 1920s. The supporting cast are also excellent
