Criminal Comedy Capers
By Charles Brickley from Andover, Hampshire, England , 19 Feb 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Michelle Pfeiffer is the jewel in the crown of this glittering cast of comic cops and crooks.
The attention to detail in telling the story of how 'Cucumber' Frank DeMarco (Alec Baldwin), the hit man from Hell upsets his boss Tony 'The Tiger' Russo (Dean Stockwell) whilst cheating on his wife Angela DeMarco (Michelle Pfeiffer) by making love to The Tiger's mistress Karen Lutnik (Nancy Travis) thus starting a plot line that makes the Sopranos look like 'The Archers' by comparison.
Add some mildly worn out FBI Agents, the ladies of the local Mobsters led by the vengeful Connie Russo (Mercedes Ruehl), the Tiger's wife and a bunch of hoodlums from the Keystone Kops and you have a comedy that will either have you laughing or groaning.
There are some great scenes, clever lines and brilliant acting in a film that Billy Wilder would have been proud of.
Yes there is some schmaltz and those saccharine Hollywood moments, but you can sense that the cast are having a great time and enjoying every moment of the film. Special Agent Mike Downey (Matthew Modine) has more disguises than Inspector Clouseau and provides the love interest to Angela who is trying to build a new life for her son Joey (Anthony J Nici).
A classic RomCom with a twist or two, worth the money!- Was this review helpful to you?

(7)Not very funny, not very interesting
By a customer from Hampshire, UK , 21 Feb 2011The film has its moments but they are few and far between and I found the acting a bit wooden most of the time - including from Dean Stockwell, who I think is normally a very good actor.
Storyline was fine but everything seemed a bit TOO rushed and cosy at times - if it had been played out over a slightly longer time frame, this would have been improved. And if Michelle P as the wife had REALLY wanted to get away from the Mob - going a LOT further away than basically round the corner would have been more obvious.
Worth renting just to kill an hour or two without having to think too much.- Was this review helpful to you?

Carry on Scorcese
By driveindavy (66 reviews) from scotland , 09 Oct 2008This is a comedy version of Goodfellas if that's possible. Michelle P. ALWAYS worth watching (even Grease 2, well...) As usual, she's funny but adds depth.
Also works for me as a Jonathan Demme film - I'm a fan, he made cool rock stuff like Stop Making Sense and Neil Young and his films include Melvin and Howard,
Something Wild, Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. Not bad huh.- Was this review helpful to you?

Brilliantly underplayed black comedy
By Julianna from Oxford , 03 Apr 2007In 'Married to the Mob', Michelle Pfeiffer finally won over the remaining skeptics with a brilliant, understated performance as a Mafia widow on the run from the dons. She is deftly supported by Matthew Modine (as an FBI agent pursuing her), Mercedes Ruehl (in a scene-stealing part as a Mafia wife) and Dean Stockwell (Oscar-nominated as the amorous Mafia boss after Pfeiffer). The comedy isn't laugh-a-minute; instead it slowly builds until you find yourself merely laughing at the absurd morbidness of it. Nevertheless, there are many laugh-out-loud moments that make the film a first-rate comedy: my favourite exchange takes place when Ruehl is searching Pfeiffer's apartment for evidence of her husband's adultery.
Pfeiffer: 'No one's here!'
Ruehl: [picking up two full wine glasses] 'What do you call these then?'
Pfeiffer: [despairingly] 'Glasses!'
Ruehl: [coldly] 'I'll remember you said that.'
Look out for Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack in bit parts.- Was this review helpful to you?
