Michelle Pfeiffer established herself as an adept actress with this colorful comedy from director Jonathan Demme (SOMETHING WILD, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS). The wife of Mafia hitman Frank "Cucumber" De Marco (Alec Baldwin), the irrepressibly brassy Angela (Pfeiffer) finds herself unhappy with their shady lifestyle, and wants out. When Frank is murdered by mob boss Tony "The Tiger" Russo (Dean Stockwell), she uses the opportunity to move to New York, get a job and go straight. But as soon as she thinks she's out, Tony wants her as his next mistress. Tony's jealous wife (Mercedes Ruehl) threatens to kill her, and a master-of-disguise FBI agent (Mathew Modine) follows her every move, and then falls in love with her. Through all the colorful insanity, Demme keeps the action on target, and the emphasis on quirky characters. A game supporting cast includes: Joann Cusack, Oliver Platt, Tracey Walter, and Jamaican singer Sister Carol. Chris Isaak, Todd Solondz, "Grampa" Al Lewis, and David Johansen are some of the many cameos. Pricelessly gaudy costume designs and a spontaneous sense of fun help make this one of the classic comedies of the 1980's.

In this comedy thriller from director Jonathan Demme, Michelle Pfeiffer donned a curly brunette wig and proved that she was a deft hand at light-hearted fare. She stars as the widow of gangster Alec Baldwin, who decides to make a new life for herself and her child, but doesn't allow for the attentions of crime boss Dean Stockwell and the FBI's Matthew Modine. The cast is superb — especially Mercedes Ruehl in over-the-top mode as Stockwell's brassy, jealous wife — and Demme keeps both the action and the laughs perfectly tuned.
"...An entertaining narrative....Demme's natural, streetwise wit has always been a distinctive element of his work, but never has his talent for closely observed satire been so evident..."
Michelle Pfeiffer is the jewel in the crown of this glittering cast of comic cops and crooks.
The attention to detail in telling the story of how 'Cucumber' Frank DeMarco (Alec Baldwin), the hit man from Hell upsets his boss Tony 'The Tiger' Russo (Dean Stockwell) whilst cheating on his wife Angela DeMarco (Michelle Pfeiffer) by making love to The Tiger's mistress Karen Lutnik (Nancy Travis) thus starting a plot line that makes the Sopranos look like 'The Archers' by comparison.
Add some mildly worn out FBI Agents, the ladies of the local Mobsters led by the vengeful Connie Russo (Mercedes Ruehl), the Tiger's wife and a bunch of hoodlums from the Keystone Kops and you have a comedy that will either have you laughing or groaning.
There are some great scenes, clever lines and brilliant acting in a film that Billy Wilder would have been proud of.
Yes there is some schmaltz and those saccharine Hollywood moments, but you can sense that the cast are having a great time and enjoying every moment of the film. Special Agent Mike Downey (Matthew Modine) has more disguises than Inspector Clouseau and provides the love interest to Angela who is trying to build a new life for her son Joey (Anthony J Nici).
A classic RomCom with a twist or two, worth the money!
Michelle Pfeifer is a good actress plays a very pretty character but I found the film superficial and a little boring.
