...Extraordinarily evocative [scenes]....[The direction] shows a definite flair for suspense...
...MARTIN is as electrically raw-edged as Romero's earlier NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD...
Martin is a very interesting film, about a boy who appears to be a Vampire (an 84 year old Vampire to be precise!). There are plenty of twists using the conventions of the vampire film to lead you around and around the issues as to whether he REALLY is a vampire. The acting is not bad, the effects, for a fairly old film are ok too. This film is a must for vampire film fans , purely for its clever manipulation of the conventions of the genre and character. A surprise ending, that caught me unawares, which also made me laugh! Also, its a must for GEORGE A. ROMERO fans, purely for its originality and comparison to his ususal Zombie flicks!
'Martin' is one of George Romero's non-zombie related movies. It seems his reputation as a great director irrespective of his Dead films is often lost, but 'Martin' should further convince you that the man has a knack for superb, atmospheric films. I must say though that 'Martin' is an acquired taste, since most of the film is quite loose with its story and more or less leaves you to figure out whether Martin really is a vampire or just a warped human being who believes he is. There isn't a whole lot of gore here but the atmosphere is quite intense and dark. This certainly isn't a happy film, and like Romero's best work, you're left with a feeling of utter dread when the credits roll. At least this is a respectable vampire movie which doesn't follow tried and tested rules.
Late comedian Henry Gibson kept his cancer battle a secret from his friends and co-stars on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In - failing to mention his illness even when they planned a reunion of the 1960s comedy sketch show. The beloved actor passed away at his home in Malibu, California on 14 September (09). The tragic news came as a surprise to his pals on the TV show because he never complained about his disease to any of them - and even planned to take part in a screen reunion scheduled for later...
