From Pascal Laugier (who will soon be directing and writing the Hellraiser remake), Martyrs is at times a very good, very effective horror movie that is bloody, violent, a little disturbing and well acted, with some very good make-up effects. Sadly it is also a little underwhelming though given my expectations due to the hype surrounding the film, in the end is nothing like what I expected it to be (the numerous comparisons to the film Inside are unnecessary, with the only similarities being that both are French films and both having blood & violence. Comparisons to films like Hostel and to a lesser extent Hellraiser would be more appropriate) and the sadistic violence in the last 30-minutes got surprisingly quite boring very quickly (rather than having the shocking & very disturbing effect I suspect the director wanted it to have). But even though Martyrs was quite a disappointment in the end, there were some good ideas and effective scenes during the film and there is hope for a good Hellraiser remake if Laugier (maybe with the help of Clive Barker) is left to make the film he envisions without interference from the producers.

This is the only horror film I have ever seen that can truly be described as 'horrifying'.

Martyrs is essentially an exploration of human suffering and our capacity for cruelty. It does so in an honest manner that is not stylized, glamorised or sanitised.

This is a film I would not recommend to anyone but serious horror fans who have a stomach for extreme films. Most people will judge this unfairly through the bias of 'offendedness'. If you are one of these people, ask yourself this: What's more offensive? Plumbing the depths of human suffering so as to produce a sanitized piece of popcorn entertainment, or depicting it honestly?

If you believe that films can be art, then you have to allow for them to tackle such subject matter and to do so in a way that is not necessarily easy, entertaining or sanitised.

In an age of Joseph Fritzel's and Ariel Castro's, I'm glad films like this exist to make us look unflinchingly at our own capacity for evil.

What a waste of eye-sight. It is a very gory film with a very bad story line. I wasted 95 minutes of my life watching it

  • Truly Sick Shock-Horror

Unbelievably sick movie that should never have been made. Like other reviewers, I've been a big fan of horror movies since ever, but like 'The Girl Next Door' this is stomach-churningly gratuitous, for the sake of shock. Given recent history, to suggest the kidnap, torture and abuse of young women is a means for them to be 'enlightened' so older generations can have proof of transfiguration after death is mind-numbingly stupid. Only serious wacko's will find anything to like about this movie. Should be banned (and I'm a horror fan that's seen em all). Truly SICK.

this is a horrific and sick film but it is also very thought provoking and i liked the fact that you thought all was ok and then you were plunged into a new level of depravity...... i was disturbed by it but i think it has a point...if you have read 'Supernatural - Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind, by Graham Hancock' you will understand the altered states of consciousness that can be caused through hallucinogens or physical torment that would cause an altered state of consciousness .......i hadn't read it at the time but it makes sense of this film.... i felt emotionally disturbed after watching this film for quite a while! it's harsh!
